Throughout the entirety of the poem the mother compares her life to stairs that are broken down, dark, missing steps, and steps with tacks in them but she states she has never stopped climbing “But all the time I’se been a-climbin’ on,” and she used repetition by repeating a line to drive home the fact that her life hasn’t been easy. “And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” Using these two methods the mother clearly states that even though life isn’t easy but you must keep climbing and…

Unfortunately the relationship between the speaker and the mother in the poem is unclear as it is stated that her mother has passed away and is in a grave, which is shown here in the following excerpt “… into the grave!” but all throughout the poem she speaks of her mother’s courage, which is shown here “courage that my mother had. Went with her, and is with her still… if instead she’d left to me. The thing she took into the grave!–That courage like a rock” which is not typically something that is said by someone who didn’t have a good relationship with the person who’d passed…

Courage, you have probably heard of this word before but what does it actually mean? Well, according to dictionary.com, an online dictionary, courage means the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is evidently portrayed when Atticus does what no white man would ever dare to do in those days, lest they be scorned by the community. Atticus had the courage to stand up for a Negro, a black, Tom Robinson. This happened in chapter 17 to chapter 22.…
A present theme that is displayed throughout the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, is courage. Harper Lee uses her characters to reflect upon people in everyday life, creating awareness of societal norms. Although the characters’ courage is not displayed directly, it can be identified in the events of their lives. Based on their surroundings, the characters develop, producing new morals. Some of which oppose the normalities of society. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses her characters to demonstrate that courage is doing what you believe is right, proving that it is not only shown through a person’s actions but through their words and ideas.…
In the game “Rock, Paper, Scissors”, rock always beats scissors. In the poem, the stone brags of its ability to have power over time and boasts of its strength and power over human wishes. The first word of the poem is “Mine”, noting that the audience has entered the argument between stone, paper, and scissors in the middle. The power that the stone is claiming a victory over is not universal power, but the power over time. Claiming power over such a great thing like time reveals the minuteness of the stone itself, making the loneliness of the stone evident.…
The next element that I enjoyed from this poem is the tone that the author uses. I think there are two different tones that she is portraying, a sad tone and a stern tone. At the beginning when she is talking about the man holding is dead wife in his arms the tone seems sad. Then it changes when she is talking about the love and chivalry he is showing as well. I imagine her talking about the man’s courage in a very stern tone of voice.…
Anne Sexton varies the types of figurative language used in her poem Courage to show the numerous examples of how it is shown, however she used metaphors for the more important things. In the first stanza, courage is being shown in little ways. Sexton’s poem is divided into four stanzas, each representing a different stage in life. The first stanza is childhood. The simile “the child’s first step, as awesome as an earthquake” is unique because it is meant both literally and metaphorically. Earthquakes are large and momentous, likewise is a child’s first step. Other events such as riding a bike for the first time and getting a spanking. This line in the poem (The first spanking when your heart/went on a journey all alone) is personification since a human heart cannot go on a journey, but it is also a metaphor saying the courage the child went through. Finally, in the first stanza, the last metaphor that is used is in the line: “you drank their acid/and concealed it”. The “their” that Anne Sexton is referring to is bullys, abusers, etc. The courage the child is showing is by “drinking the acid” which is representing the hurtful words or abuse, and then hiding the pain felt. The second…
The veterans in “Speaking of Courage” and “Soldier’s Home” undergo emotional trauma left to them by their war experiences. Reintegrating themselves back into society is a trial both Krebs and Norman Bowker face. But truly, it is the attitude that each man demonstrates that sets them apart. Their emotions influence the way they experience both the civilian world and civilian life. Authors Tim O’Brien and Ernest Hemingway’s style usage help readers understand the character’s personalities and difficulties. Krebs’s disinterested attitude is a result of the urge to keep responsibilities and “complications” at bay. While Bower’s constant guilt restricts him from truly living in the present and moving onto the future.…
In “Mother to Son,” Langston Hughes uses figurative language like metaphors and tone to enhance the theme that you must keep going even through hard times. This poem relates to an important theme in life and in the poem of that you must keep going forward in life and not giving up. This theme is so important in life and in society because if you just give up during hard times you will never go anywhere in life except down. This poem shows us how we should never give up and I believe in that…
Esther a very beautiful in the “Holy Bible” was a very courageous loving individual who stood up to the king, as she was equal to him. Fear. Something we know about all too well. Consuming us, we could run from fear or we could rise above it. A new hobby, joining a new school with a smile, answering a question in class, even something as small as getting out of bed when it’s especially hard can be a large step for anyone. They’re overcoming their fears. Having courage means even when someone is scared–wanting to turn around and go home–they still choose to face the situation. All ages can show it. And even though it’s daunting, it either pushes a person further in life or keeps them where they are.…
Courage is a relative term. There is courage in the extraordinary, saving a life, and there is courage in everyday life, standing up for whats right.
