What is a trade union?

An organization whose membership consists of workers and union leaders, united to protect and promote their common interests.
The principal purposes of a labor union are to negotiate wages and working condition terms, regulate relations between workers its members and the employer, take collective action to enforce the terms of collective bargaining, raise new demands on behalf of its members, and help settle their grievances. A trade union may be: A company union that represents interests of only one company and may not have any connection with other unions. Also called house union, a company union is often a bogus one and generally illegal. A general union that represents workers from several companies in the same industry. Also called industrial union. A craft union that represents skilled workers in a particular field such as carpentry or welding.

Function of trade unions in Jamaica

Jamaica teachers association-The Jamaica Teacher's Association is a union encompassing most of the teachers in Jamaica. The Teacher's Association therefore is responsible for, and mandated to "make representation on matters related to education and teachers" to the government of Jamaica on behalf of teachers.

National workers union-The Jamaica Civil Service Association was founded in 1919, predating all the island's major Trade Unions which were not founded until the late 30's. The Association is a non-partisan organization providing quality service to its members by representing and safeguarding their legitimate interests. To this end members
