1 Introduction
1.1 What is Fish Disease
There are actually hundreds of diseases that can affect both marine and freshwater fish, the most apparent problem found in cultured species of fish are either bacterial or parasitic as a source. As well as this fungal infections can occur just like in humans and can be spread as quickly as some human fungal ailments such as athlete’s foot. But just like in humans fish can be affected by viral infections which are the most difficult to diagnose and treat sometimes it can be untreatable and the fish just become carriers of the disease.
This can have a devastating effect on fish stocks in farms and in aquaria so this is where quarantine comes in. In commercial systems before any new individual is introduced into a system or farm they undergo quarantine so that any infections can be identified and dealt with so the spread of infection does not occur. Neale Monks Ph.D. states that “Viruses can be transmitted between fish by direct contact, or by water or wet objects being moved from one fish aquarium to another. In situations where the virus is known to be extremely contagious, as with the koi herpes virus (KHV) and dwarf gourami iridovirus (DGIV), strict quarantining procedures are essential.”
