The introduction of the nutria rat into other areas was supposed to provide economic benefits, but instead in Louisiana, they caused damage to cane, rice fields, and wetlands. Nutria rats live in “brackish marshes and wetlands and feed on vegetation that is vital to sustaining the Louisiana coastline” (“Nutria, Eating Louisianas Coast” 1). When they feed on the vegetation it is called eat-outs which end up making “openings in the marsh vegetation, and they are currently affecting an estimated 100,000 acres of coastal wetlands” (“Nutria, Eating Louisianas Coast” 1). Most of the wetlands were “converting to open water at a rate of 25-35 square miles (65-91 square kilometers) each year” (“Nutria, Eating Louisianas Coast” 1). At this rate, the…
In this experiment, the preferences of mealworms towards lighted and dark environments were tested. The main question posed was whether the behavior of the mealworms would be affected by the variable of light, and whether they would move towards or away from the light source (taxis). We placed ten mealworms into two adjoining containers and tried to simulate the effects of above ground and underground by exposing the mealworms to minimal amounts of light in one of the containers (underground), and placing the other container under a lamp (above ground). A beaker of water was utilized as a heat sink to prevent the variable of heat from tampering with the variable being tested. Twenty five-minute interval trials were conducted in total.…

Bureau of Labor Statistics, 91% of vet techs work in the veterinary services industry at: Private clinics, laboratories, animal hospitals, boarding kennels, animal shelters, rescue leagues, and zoos. Vet techs are also found in non-traditional settings such as livestock facilities, wildlife control services, research laboratories, and in the military. The schedules of vet techs vary across settings. Those in 24-hour facilities often work evenings, weekends and holidays. In private clinics, techs are more likely to have regular business hours, though they will need to come in some evenings and weekends to feed and care for patients.…
Veterinary technicians, commonly known as veterinary technicians, provide care and comfort to sick or injured animals. They work with veterinarians or scientists in a way that is similar to the help a nurse gives to a doctor. Many people become attracted to this occupation because of a love of animals, but there is a downside, both physically and emotionally. Animals may bite, scratch or otherwise injure veterinary technicians who are caring for them. There is an emotional toll that comes from seeing the results of abuse or abandonment, and from having to euthanize ill or injured animals.…
Alan L. Olmstead and Paul W. Rhode have presented a multidisciplinary approach to examine the history of animal disease control in the United States, that incorporates environmental history, political history, legislative history, veterinary history, medical history, economic analysis, and…
Throughout time medical technology and knowledge of the various insects and mammals which we share this earth with has continuously evolved, allowing us to discover more families and species of arthropods and also their importance to both human and veterinary life. Within these discoveries entomologist have learned of the vectors and different ways of transmission from parasites to their host. For those of the parasites that are arthropods some of them have a medical importance and some don’t; but of those which do two of the very important genus include the mosquito (Culicidae) and the tick (Ixodida). Both of which have been found to transmit several viruses and diseases some causing death depending on the severity of what that victim allows it to be. Many of them resulting in death and the spread of these cases all around the United States and leave their originated areas and migrate to other parts of the world.…
If your child is 8 years of age or less, because of the effects of drugs of the tetracycline-class on tooth development and growth, use doxycycline in pediatric patients 8 years of age or less only when the potential benefits are expected to outweigh the risks in severe or life-threatening conditions (e.g., anthrax, Rocky Mountain spotted fever), particularly when there are no alternative therapies.…
Rickettsia rickettsia was named after the first person who discover Rocky Mountain Spotted fever, Howard Taylor Ricketts. The unicellular aerobic gram negative non-motile, non-spore forming, coccobacilli bacterium are 0.3-0.5 x 0.8-2.0 um. It is in the family Rickettsiaceae and order Rickettsiales of the α-Proteobacteria. It is a unicellular microorganism that lacks a distinct nucleus and membrane- bound organelles, while it is a three-layered cell wall and its outer membrane is mainly composed of lipopolysaccharides. It can be stained using the Machiavello, Giernsa, and Gimenea methods. R. rickettsia is a dangerous pathogen as it dwells in an arthropod tissue and causes a terrible disease when transmitted to vertebrates.…
Veterinarians have a promising outlook which in turn leads to a promising career. In fact, the employment rate for veterinarians is predicted to grow nine percent by the year 2024. The state of Hawaii has the greatest outlook according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The highest percentage of employment growth is seen in food and animal safety which involves preventing food contamination from animals and various other species (“Veterinarians” 6). Aside from the outlook, there are many opportunities to advance in this field. “Veterinarian schools can train their students for positions in other occupations such as public health, disease control, corporate sales, and population studies” (“Veterinarians” 6). For example, Veterinarians have many opportunities to extend their knowledge to others by teaching at schools or colleges who offer courses in animal science. Aside from teaching, veterinarians also have the opportunity to get their board certification which can lead to better income and security within their job. Getting a private practice is also seen as a prestigious step that is a result from many years of experience (“So, you” 2). There are many advancements in the career itself. Today veterinarians are qualified to offer more treatments that are akin to human health care. Cancer treatment for animals has improved tremendously in recent…

America was not a paradise and saw diseases like in any other continent, tuberculosis, and intestinal worms are just two examples, but there were a handful of other infectious diseases that had not crossed the Pacific prior to 1492. To mention some of them the following apply smallpox, measles, and cholera. The Indian’s immune system was accustomed to local diseases, but the European men brought with them diseases of the Old World, which the aboriginals were not physically prepared to handle. The American geographer Carl Sauer remarks in the following quote his understanding on the matter of depopulation:…
“More cases of Lyme disease are reported than any other vector-borne disease in the United States. There were 29,959 confirmed cases and 8509 probable cases of Lyme disease in the United States in 2009” (CDC, 2012, p. 1) Once Lyme disease was primarily diagnosed around the Mid-Atlantic and New England states; however, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is concerned, because it is now “endemic (prevalent) in the Northeast and much of the North Central United States including Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Pennsylvania” (Smith, 2011, p. 1).…
An emerging public health concern in the New River Valley is the increase in reported cases of Lyme disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vectorborne illness in the United States,” although it is concentrated primarily in only thirteen states. The New River Valley reported a record number of cases in 2012, and is considered endemic to Lyme disease per the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) (Jones, S, 2010). There is no clear explanation, but some theories attribute the increased prevalence to environmental factors. There are many implications for health care providers and public health clinicians.…
