Litotes In The Great Gatsby
Litotes are used by authors for multiple reasons: deliberate confusion, humorous irony, understatement, exposing biases, emphasis, or measured twists used to make the reader read deeper and work out what is really being said. For Fitzgerald the device helps to portray tone and mood with connections to different themes and symbols as well. In the beginning, by understating the sinister characteristics of the Eggs Fitzgerald is able to develop an ominous tone that entices the reader to read on. Near the middle he establishes more on setting with the description of Gatsby’s house, strengthening the question of his mysterious existence.
