We need to find the balance of being on their level, using body language is key, talking too them with eye contact by either sitting down at their level or kneeling down. A child response depends on what they have understood, so using the right words is key for them to absorb what they are being asked or told. Being patient for a response gives the child a chance to be confident and independent in what they want to say. We can not hurry the child because in some cases it causes them to panic, or hesitate and get nervous which ends in a less successful response. Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults because we need to be able to listen to each other and be able to interpret what others are saying correctly. We need to be able to read their body language signs such as eye contact and the tone of voice they are using, and therefore be able to respond in the right way and show that we understand what they are saying. There are many different things that are very important in making respectful and professional relationships with children. It is extremely important to praise and encourage children when communicating with them, this lets them know when they have done something well and will encourage them to try their best and do well as much as they can. Praising can be verbal, in the form of a sticker or merit, certificates or a prize. Younger children often find it easier to speak rather than listen when communicating, however it is important that they learn to be patient and be respectful of others when they are speaking, if an adult models this to them then they are more likely to copy and learn this behaviour. Non-verbal communication can often be very useful and effective within a classroom environment. Teaching assistants especially may use gestures instead of vocabulary as it means they can communicate with the children without disturbing the teacher or the rest of the children, something as simple as eye contact and a frown will tell the student that they are doing something wrong, they have been noticed and that they need to stop. When speaking to children it is always better to be at their level as standing over them can often intimidate them, it is important to keep distance but ensure they know they are being listened too.…

Children and young people are all different, this means that we need to adapt the way in which we communicate with them according to their personality, age and stage of development. In order to build good relationships we need to gain information, build trust and respond in a way that makes the child feel comfortable and relaxed. When a child is relaxed they do better and are far more likely to join in and gain more from learning and play experiences. Children are less likely to exhibit unwanted behaviours when a good relationship is in place, they are also more likely to interact with us, talking to us, building confidence and improving language development. Children need to be able to turn to adults for reassurance and advice and are quick to recognise adults who will listen to them and empathise, in our role this is important if we are to support them.…

    * Listen – it is important for the child to know that you care, get on their level and listen to what they have to say; even repeating parts of what they say so that they know you’ve taken an interest. However it is also key to know when to say enough is enough, “tell me later” “hold that thought and tell me at break or lunch”. This way the kid knows that you are listening but they have the information that something else is happening.…

Punishment and praise is important when positively communicating with children or young adults. They have to learn boundaries and be taught to respect others. Also, giving praise is essential.
