Live Performance Review’s

This review consists of my opinion on three music videos from three different genres of music. I have chosen the following videos to do my review on:
1. Classical: Lang Lang performs Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No.23
(‘Appassionata’), third movement.
2. Jazz: Glen Miller Orchestra performing In the Mood.
3. Modern: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant (members of Led Zepplin) playing Kasmir.
This assignment took on a broader meaning then just critiquing music.
It has expanded my horizons regarding music as well. I hope other people will be exposed to the various types of music that exists and will receive as much enjoyment from it as I have. I will start my review with the genre of Classical Music. I have chosen Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No.23 (‘Appassionata’), third movement, being performed by Lang Lang. For this particular piece, only one instrument is needed: a piano and that is all that appears on the stage in this video. The stage itself is very bland, kind of generic looking. There is nothing colorful or exciting about the stage. It reminds me of an old elementary schools’ auditorium. I’m assuming the music will more than make up for the rather old and dreary looking stage. The only ‘prop’ on stage is a beautiful piano with a gentleman in a tuxedo seated on the bench. This is Lang Lang. As he starts to play the keys of the piano, I am first struck by how long and lean his fingers appear to be. Then he proceeds to play faster and I am in awe at how nimble his fingers move over the piano keys. His fingers move with such an incredible swiftness that it makes you wonder if your eyes are actually seeing this. Along with the unbelievable movements of his hands, Lang starts to exhibit some rather interesting facial expressions. But my eyes kept coming back to his hands. I’m afraid I spent so much time watching his hands that the actual sounds he was producing on the piano didn’t really matter. So, I watched the video over again.
The interpretation of this piece was pretty much just average as far as I am concerned. Even though Lang Lang plays with such amazing speed and dexterity; there just isn't much emotion felt when he strikes the piano keys. It seems like he was playing “by the book” and it was more like a procedure for him to play. In saying that, I am just expressing my opinion. The piece was done ‘correctly’ and he plays extraordinary well, however, I did not want to see or hear the performance again. I will say this about Lang Lang however; he can play the piano with a swiftness and nimbleness that few men can. I am going to listen to other performances by him and see if I can ‘feel’ him in the music because in this particular piece, I did not. Now, for my second review, which is to be a jazz selection, I picked the Glenn Miller Orchestra performing 'In the Mood'. This video was pleasantly surprising. What a wonderfully jazzy and up-beat song! Glenn Miller and his Orchestra give an incredibly strong performance. The video is in black and white, and that actually adds to the charm of the song. The orchestra is seated in even, parallel rows and there is such unison and harmony between the band members that your eyes and ears want to see/ hear everything at once. The stage was very basic; there were only curtains for the background, yet it did not appear drab or dreary as in the classical video I had just reviewed (see review #1). There was almost every type of instrument involved, except for string instruments. I only noticed a bass cello. And there was no piano or violins. However, there was almost every type of reed and wind instrument you would want to hear. The Glenn Miller Orchestra consists of trumpets, saxophones, horns, drums, bass cello and even cowbells. The musicians handle their instruments with such ease and professionalism and they are totally in synch with each other. All of this comes across to the viewer throughout the video. The band seems to really enjoy themselves as well. Perhaps it is this enjoyment of the music they are playing that comes through to the listener. This song had it all…it's fast, loud, and very uplifting and it makes a person want to dance and/or play the song over and over again. It also has some softer, quieter moments too. All I know is that I truly enjoyed this song and I wish everyone could hear it. One thing for certain, I am going to be listening to a lot more of Glenn Miller’s music! I give this performance five stars or five thumbs up!
My final review is in the Modern music era. I chose Jimmy Page and Robert Plant (members of Led Zepplin) playing the song 'Kasmir'. My first thoughts are about the stage and the background colors. The stage [s somewhat dark and ominous. There are lots of purples and dark blues; sort of black light purples and dark universe blues. Robert Plant wears a dark maroon color shirt, which adds to the darkness on stage. If not for his blonde hair adding some lightness, he would have blended right into the background. There are a lot of musicians on stage which makes it look somewhat crowded.
Plant and Page utilize an orchestra for this song and it’s a good thing they do. In my opinion, the orchestra makes this performance outstanding. Plant still has great stage presence and his straining on vocals throughout the song isn’t that obvious; however, if the orchestra hadn’t been playing, it would have been quite noticeable.
As far as the musicality of this song, it is superb due to the orchestra. This orchestra consist's of numerous violins, cellos, and an organ, various reed instruments, bongo drums, Arab Strings, Egyptian Bamboo Flutes and a few other instruments I don’t know the names of. Added to all these instruments are your standard western electric guitar, drums and bass, you have the makings of a most impressive song. The violinists’ and the percussionists are fabulous. The violinist who does a solo about half way through is simply incredible!
If this is an example of Western Music fusing with Eastern Music, then we have a lot of magnificent music to look forward to; and maybe music can help bring the world closer together. It's unfortunate the general population doesn’t get enough exposure to the different genres of music that are available. People would be surprised to find out that they like classical or opera music. Even if a person doesn’t like classical music, if it’s combined with another type of music like rock, they might find that they do indeed like the fused music better than when the styles are separate.
As long as bands like Led Zepplin keep fusing the different types of music genres, then I have a strong feeling that music long forgotten will be revived and people will appreciate the different styles all over again.

He mentions that Tesfaye already has five top-selling songs on Billboard this week, one of the most esteemed countdowns in North America. He also names some of the influential and powerful people in the music industry who also attended the concert such as Kardinal Offishall, Bell Media production president Randy Lennox and Universal Music Canada CEO Jeffery Remedios. This communicates that the Weeknd is very prominent in the music industry and he is attracting the attention of big names who see a great deal of potential in him. Above all, he mentions Tesfaye’s world tour which signifies that, not only is he popular in North America, but he is admired worldwide and enough fan around the world to fill stadiums and play shows. Another effective rhetorical device employed is diction. The author’s vocabulary is very informal and almost conversational in nature making the targeted age group more interested in reading this review. Due to the fact that the topic of the article is The Weeknd, those interested in reading this article are most likely are young adults that is why the word choice is colloquial and for ease of reading. Diction is also used to emphasize and further praise Tesfaye. He utilizes adjectives such as “buoyant”, “impressive” and “stratospheric” to describe each the concert and to prove that he is an outstanding performer…

All of them had a good posture, and a good tone. However, I suggest that they could have fewer violins, or more of other instruments. The group played ten pieces throughout the concert. The pieces were the Introduction and Tarantella by Pablo Sarasate, Pezzo Capriccioso Op. 62 by Peter Tchaikovsky, Violin Concerto in D major by Johannes Brahms, Barcarolle in F major by Fryderyk Chopin, Piano Concerto no.2 in F major by Fryderyk Chopin, Clarinet Concerto no.1, in F by Carl Maria von Weber, Caprice no.24 in A minor by Niccolo Paganini, Vioiln Concerto no.2 by Henryk Wieniawski, Etude-Tableauz Op. 39 no.9 by Sergei Rachmaninov and Piano Converto no.3 in C minor by Ludwig van…

The live performance that I had attended to was Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra “Messiah” near Madison, WI. The genre of composition is supposed to be drama. This composition genre is an oratorio, which is a large-scale dramatic genre originating in the Baroque. Baroque is based on text of religious or serious character, performed by solo voices, chorus, and orchestra; similarto opera but without scenery, costumes, or actions. This specific oratorio is different because this composition is in three parts but is compilation of biblical verses from Old and New Testaments. The text for “Rejoice greatly” is actually from the New Testament itself.…

Personally notable movements from the first piece of the program, Piano Trio in C Minor, Op. 2, are Andante and Vivace. Pappone, “lauded as a ‘first rate’ violinist by Maestro Lorin Maazel” and founder of the non-profit Delius Music Academy (Mallory Concert Series Program), executed technique perfection from my hearing. His pianoforte was divine and every note softly washed over the audience with pitch precision. Moving from the second to the third movement there was an exaggeration of sad drama. Even by looking at the instrumentalists faces it was clear this was far from an upbeat movement; as the three instruments meshed together in a gloomy way to match the weather. The end of the selection seemed to involve a…

The viola player tapping the viola with the bow to make a sound like blink blink blink was creative in my eyes. It was interesting to see a beautiful piece played with only three instruments. The song is so beautiful that it sounds like music you would hear in a fairy tale forests. I liked the piece “Soft Watches” by Ileana Perez-Valazquez. It was a creative and fun idea to make the piece based off the painting Salvador Dali’s famous painting “Persistence of Memories”.…

Holding truth today and in the past, attending classical concerts is hailed as a sign of both sophistication and style. Very reminiscent of 18th Century attendances at places like the Music Center at Strathmore, my noteworthy experience broadened my musical horizon. As a newcomer to classical concert-going, I was enthralled by the aural masterpieces and the alluring atmosphere. In partaking in the National Philharmonic's opening concert of the year at the Music Center at Strathmore, one experiences the warm ambiance of classical music in modern times while retaining its renowned value.…

The Washburn University Recital was held in the White Concert Hall. It featured 6 different ensembles, each having their own compositions. The program began with the euphonium horn with piano accompaniment. The second performance included the flute with piano accompaniment. The third performance included the tuba with piano accompaniment. The fourth performance was a male singer with accompaniment from the piano. The fifth performance was the euphonium horn with piano accompaniment. The last performance was an ensemble that included the flute, french horn, oboe, and two clarinets. I really enjoyed how eclectic the performances were, and the different styles of music kept my interest throughout every performance.…

It was Monday, November 17 cold and snowy outside Ophelia Paris Concert Hall, Truman State University but inside it was all warmth and light as Elaine AuBuchon started the Double Reed Recital. Having not been to any actual classical music concert, I was excited to hear the talent that we have in our campus. I took it upon myself to go with an open mind, without having any previous predispositions that would affect my reaction to the concert. I just wanted to go in there, not knowing anything about the concert, and see what I hear in the music. This concert was open to anyone and free admission. The program presented a variety of styles…

First on the program was Grand Quartet in E Minor by Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832). Kuhlau was a concert pianist and a composer of the Danish opera; he composed over 200 works in his lifetime. The first work the ensemble preformed was Andante Maestoso, the intro to the song was very soft, and it had a sense of a nature vibe to the melody. The pitch then proceeded to escaladed higher; at points during the work it was changing from all four flutes playing in unison to just one stand out flute and the rest in a base beat. I really enjoyed the change of pace throughout the song and how one flute stood out showed off that person’s unique set of skills that maybe differs them from the rest of the ensemble. The work ended in a very fast paced rhythm and there was no insinuation that the work was going to end because there was no build up to the finale of the work. I really enjoyed this piece but the only down fall was it was very long and none of the other songs in the ensemble were nearly that long.…
