Occasionally all humans experience emotions that bring them down making them feel sad. Whether it was because your favorite team lost or you and your significant other had a dispute. Feeling this kind of emotion is normal for humans from time time to time. These kind of feelings aren’t temporary, they usually last a couple of days and you go on with your everyday life. According to the Mayo Clinic, Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest in everyday activities. Depression affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems (2014). It can make you feel as if you are worthless and life isn 't worth it. Often times depression, if extremely severe it can lead to suicide. There are several forms of depressive disorders. Major depression is one of these forms. Some of the symptoms the person who suffers from this illness go through are severe symptoms that interfere with your ability to work, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy life. An episode can occur only once in a person’s lifetime, but more often, a person has several episodes. Persistent depressive disorder is another form. This type can last for at least 2 years. A person diagnosed with persistent depressive disorder may have episodes of major depression along with periods of less severe symptoms, but symptoms must last for 2 years (NIMH, 2012). No one is sure what the causes of depression are but many believe many that genetics,psychological, and environmental factors have to do with it.Sign and symptoms may vary per person. The length and severity depends upon each person. Some of the common symptoms include feeling sad, hopeless, overeating, suicide thoughts, feel of guilt,and also loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex (NIMH, 2014).
