Depressive disorders during youth occur frequently. During childhood there are an estimated one to two percent of children between the ages of six and twelve that have a Major depressive disorder. That rate changes to two to five percent in adolescents or ages thirteen to eighteen. Fourteen to twenty five percent of youth experiences at least one episode of major depression before adulthood. Depression has been diagnosed at a much higher rate than in the past few decades. Episodes of major depression will reoccur within a five year time period. Depression is often combined with anxiety disorders, dysthymia, disruptive disorders and, or substance abuse and is associated with increased risk taking behavior that could lead to sexual transmitted infections or pregnancy. Depression in youth can last for several months and is often circular and returns. Some studies show that many adolescents that have depression grow up to be depressed adults. The lack of care and identification of depression from pre-adolescent depression is also a factor the leads to adult depression. Some researchers suggest that the care given to a child while transitioning into adulthood is not consistent so there is a loss in continuity from child to adult depression. Other data suggest that children with major depression continue to experience high rates of depression into adulthood and through out there lives. Many youth that have depression often have substantial impairment in social functioning, including poor school achievement and problems with both family and peers. Depressed youth also have a higher rate of suicide. Other psychosocial impairment growths with increasing severity of depression; however, even minor depression is associated with much social impairment. Depression is the most common mental disorder, not only for adults, but for children and teenagers as well. The DSM-IV classifies depression as a mood disorder. It states that an individual has suffered a “major depressive episode” if certain symptoms persist for at least two weeks, including a loss of enjoyment in previously pleasurable activities, a sad or irritable mood, a significant change in weight or appetite, problems sleeping or concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness. These symptoms of depression fall into four categories: mood, cognitive, behavioral, and physical. Depression affects how individuals feel, think, behave, and how their bodies work. People with depression may experience symptoms in any or all of the categories, depending on personal characteristics and the severity of the depression. Although depression is usually first noticed during the teen or early adult years, a person can have an episode of depression at any age. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is estimated to be 2% in children and 6% in adolescents and up to 25% of adults age >60 experience MDD, dysthymic disorder, or “minor” depression. Although diagnosis and treatment of major depressive disorder is similar among all patients, its symptoms and course may be atypical in children, adolescents, and older adults. Awareness of these varying clinical manifestations can facilitate early recognition and treatment. Although diagnosis and treatment of depression is similar regardless of a patient’s age, younger and older patients may not exhibit typical depressive symptoms.…

However, news coverage and media has over exaggerated the risk of antidepressants. According to Docksai, (2009) “Warning labels meant to protect young people might be doing them more harm than good.” (p. 1). Media casts have reported that antidepressants are pointless since they will not magically heal the chemical imbalance in the brain, however, neither will sitting around doing nothing. Antidepressants are a step towards feeling better, and in the long run that’s all we really want, to feel good. (Marano, 1999, p. 3). “FDA warning was based on studies in 2003 that found about 1% of adolescents and young adults experienced an increase in suicidal thinking after starting antidepressants” (Freyer, 2014, p. 2). Although there is still a slight increase in people who had suicidal thoughts after starting medication, if doctors were to better monitor their patients this may reduce the risk of suicidal action. “The best way to help depressed and suicidal patients is to closely monitor them and prescribe drugs whenever appropriate: we can do more good by encouraging treatment for all depressed children and adults.”(Docksai, 2009, p. 3). People should not be afraid of what treatment would do to them, they should consider the risk of under treatment. “At least 90% of people who commit suicide have a diagnosable and potentially treatable mental…

Although I wanted to find the effects of antidepressants on their developing brain, there has not been much research done on that yet. An article on WebMD shows the effects of antidepressants in children (“Depression in Children and Teens – Medications”). The article only mentions one new negative effect of it, that being a slight increase in suicide rates. . Overall, antidepressants have the same effects on children as they do on adults. Although many people say the positive effects of antidepressants outweigh the negative, I disagree. The one positive is that if rids the patient of the side effects of depression. The problem with that is that it is treating the symptoms, not the condition itself. The patient will continue to be depressed when they stop taking the medicine, which is why they become so dependent on it. There are many long-term negative effects that I’m sure people are not aware of and will eventually…

Depression is not only a state of being sad, it is a disease that conquers the ability to feel emotion, whether good or bad, whatsoever. Depression not only involves the mind, it also involves the body and thoughts. Depression is not a disease that only influences males or children of the age three to eleven. Every human being is prone to depression. Although women are three times more likely to become depressed than men, men are five times more likely to commit suicide when depressed than women. Although all age groups are open to depression, teenagers are the most common to be heard of being affected by the disease. This is probably because of peer pressure and the changes in their life. One great risk for becoming depressed is if you smoke. Some scientists hold to believe that smoking may be linked to Depression. Tobacco smoke kills off an enzyme that is responsible for breaking down a nerve cell chemical that activates pleasure seeking behavior. Most experts believe a combination of family history (your genes) and stressful life events may cause depression. Genes: people whose family members have had depression are more likely to go through a depression period. Life events are a major cause of depression for example the lost of a loved one, had a baby (depression after birth), recently divorced, constant stress, substance abuse, or any other life…
