II. INTRODUCTION

Have you ever had a time when you were making a good living, lived in a nice place, drove a nice car, took trips, had everything you needed and more - and yet you were still unhappy? It wasn't that you were ungrateful for what you had, just something seemed wrong. You weren't fulfilled, or some-thing, but you couldn't quite figure out what the problem was? Maybe you're in a situation like that now. You feel like you should be happy, who wouldn't given all that you have, but you're not. It simply means that your life is out of balance. Something has been shoved under the rug and forgotten about. It might be spending quality time with family or friends, or even just by yourself. It might be that you're not eating well enough to keep your body balanced. It might be that even though you make a good living, you don't love what you do. If you look at the life of a celebrity, you can understand why they would be so unhappy. Their lives are totally out of balance. They spend years on the road. They don't have the time for important relationships and recreational time. They're always under pressure to be the "star". We need to recognize that we define what success is to us. Whether we measure success to be the attainment of a house for our family or finding true love as shown in "The Gilded Six-Bits", we set the bar. There is no reason to continually be discontented always longing for that next material thing that you think will bring you success and ultimately happiness. Realize the value in the things that we have because the grass always looks greener on the other side, but one never…

David Sze (July 7, 2015) posted a column in the Huffington Post entitled, “Money and Happiness? It’s Complicated.” As the title suggests, Sze discusses the link between having money and finding happiness, or “life satisfaction.” He approaches the issue from a post-modern perspective without considering any transcendent categories to evaluate the issue. Leaving a theistic perspective out, Sze struggles to find an adequate explanation for meaning, happiness and satisfaction in life.…

In today 's society, people spend their whole life searching for happiness. It can be argued that people will never find true happiness, because as humans, we don 't know what it means to be truly happy. Many believe that achieving true happiness can only be done by achieving the American Dream first. However, once an individual achieves the American Dream, will he or she truly be happy? Is money happiness? Through characters Jay Gatsby from the novel "The Great Gatsby", and Christopher Gardner from the movie "The Pursuit of Happyness", true happiness will be compared and contrasted as it pertains to the American Dream and the two characters.…

Okay, now what makes me happy are, my friends and family, the prospect of a financially successfully career, and Moral values. I love my brother and sisters so much and I find it unfortunate that I found this out when I went away from home for the first time. My mom and dad love them dearly. They make me happy. Whenever I talk to them on the phone I usually have a huge smile on my face. When I see them, I can’t retain my enthusiasm to the extent that I freak them out a little. My immediate family is the one constant I can count on. I have a web of friends, they obviously do not all know one another. I like to keep the close, and know that I can count on…

Those who are happiest, never have everything; rather, they are thankful for everything they do have. In an ideal world, everything would be perfect for each of us. There would be no restrictions, no hardships, and no sadness. Unfortunately, such a world is unattainable, which is why we have to make do with the good we do have; something we all possess, no matter how bad things may seem. Dwelling on all the things you do not have will never leave you satisfied, and will never let you be truly happy. Happiness is acceptance, perspective, and embracing all you have.…

There are many reasons as to why people are unhappy, but when there isn’t an obvious external cause, it is unbearable and seems inescapable. The way to cure this unhappiness is to do as Russel did. He discovered the things he most desired, gradually acquired many of these things and dismissed certain objects of desire. Mainly, he diminished his preoccupation with himself.…

“It seems only natural that happiness should flow from having more money. Even if they don’t admit it, people still behave as though it were true. More money means you can have what you want and do what you want.” (Dean 2008). Wealth and possessions do not equal happiness because no matter how much money and gems you have you can not buy feelings, but only comfort, also if you are working hard for more money you are experiencing more stress and negative emotions.…

We are constantly looking for ways and shortcuts that can make us happier, but aren’t working. Self Help books are put in place to guide us through achieving happiness, but because of the strong “demand for such books, is a strong indication that they are not working.” People go out looking for ways to achieve happiness but are not finding it, it makes them question if they are even having an effect. Happiness happens naturally, and you shouldn’t expect it or wait for it to happen. Letting yourself accept that might “if you're lucky, you’ll find happiness naturally.” In other words you can’t just hope and try for happiness, it comes naturally, and you should wait to see if you are…

Being happy with what you have is not a bad thing. The rub comes in when, as an adult, we either fool ourselves into believing a lie in such a case as to hold us back from greater good. We can also get into the keeping up with the Jones type lifestyles where we can not be happy with what we have and continually strive for the status symbols of society. Perfect example is a guy I worked with. Gary would make statements like “I only have the best!” This was and still is the most ridiculous thing that could be said. You see, I knew what the man made a year. I couldn’t afford the best and he was farther in debt than I was. Now, with the scene set, I was able to find a deal on a Chevrolet Suburban. It was nice, ¾ ton, 4 wheel drive, big block v8, and red. At the time Gary was driving a Lexus. After I drove the suburban to work the Lexus had to go. It was not a week till he was rolling in with a black Tahoe. What was his need? By his own admission he couldn’t justify the purchase to his wife. Well, Gary has the best and a major loan to go along with it. This is a spiraling decent into debt that eventually will lead to a lot being taken away. Hindering our thinking can be monumentally dangerous from the point of living beyond our…

But what is being happy? I am only eighteen years old currently and have been asking myself that question since I gained a mature sense of mind. The years I have lived so far act as a source of guidance for me to better understand the world and life we all have and indirectly share. Childhood is a small portion of a lifetime which essentially lasts 10 years. After entering middle school, children are expected to grow up a little bit and start feeling for their own responsibilities. During those modified stages, a person loses their imagination and things start to become serious. Life grows a new meaning, and people start to wonder how to figure it out. But that’s the thing, life is just another word for figuring it out. No one knows what today or tomorrow will bring. Everyone is so diverse yet we all indirectly coincide with each other. And that matters a great amount. People in America are beyond privileged to have the lives we live, but what some of us fail to understand is that we have people going without food and water and education and shelter all around us yet what are we to do about it? There is a clear line between being selfless and being selfish. And I believe no matter how big or strong or widely known you are, you too need help sometimes. And that’s where I would like to bring up a past instance I have lived…
