1.1

Having a “duty of care” means it is my responsibility to provide care and support to individuals within the policies and procedures and agreed ways of working as set out by my employer and within the law. It is about avoiding injury and abuse from occurring to individuals, their friends and family and also my work colleagues and wider community. Having a “duty of care” in my work role means that wherever possible the health, safety and wellbeing of the people I support is maintained and I must do everything reasonable within the definition of my job role to ensure this happens.

I have a duty of care to raise any concerns that I may have from my working conditions to potential cases of abuse. This helps to prevent further harm or potential harm from occurring. I can help to ensure that individuals are kept safe by completing health and safety checks, carrying out and adhering to risk assessments, following individuals support plans and working in a person centred approach.

Measures which can be taken to ensure a safeguarding concern does not continue include reporting safeguarding concerns to relevant persons such as social services/police. Documenting and handing over all relevant information to my colleagues or third parties. Ensuring regular contact and reviews are made with those being supported. Being aware of the signs and symptoms of abuse and or neglect and having a good understanding of the whistleblowing procedure.
