1.1 Explain what it means to have a duty of care in own work role
Duty of care in my own work place means that I have a legal responsibility to care for each service user and to give them the necessary support required within the law. All service users should be treated as individuals regardless of their gender, sexuality, religion or ethnic background. They should be supported and encouraged to enter into the working environment which is free from prejudice and safe from abuse.
To have a duty of care within my work is to understand each individuals’ needs, and respect and empower them to use their right to make informed choices. It is also important for me to maintain confidentialty and to do my utmost to build up trust with each individual. This is vital, because most service users I work with have been hurt by others through their drug and alcohol use and really find it dificult to trust new people. Therfore, it is my duty of care to build up that trust, to be honest from the outset, and to communicate in an correct manner and most importantly, to be sensitive to each individual’s physical, mental and emotional needs.
1.2 Explain how duty of care contributes to the safeguarding or protection of individuals
In my job role I have a duty of care to raise any concerns I might have about any aspect of my work. This may include things like poor working conditions, not enough privacy, health and safety in the work, confidentialtiy being broken, boundaries being crossed and professional neglect. If any of these circumstances were to arise then I would have a duty of care to take that evidence straight to my line manager or manager and discuss the appropriate line of action that would then have to be taken.
It is my duty of care to safegaurd individuals from any harm. If there is a possible risk of harm from another service user for example, then it is my duty to protect the
