Lol
Overtime, LOL has been used mostly on the internet to add emphasis on something someone said that was funny. LOL is an abbreviation of the phrase laugh out loud or laughing out loud. According to etymoline.com, lol first came into use in 1993 on the internet. Over the years, social media platforms have influenced the use of lol. Most don’t remember LOL being used at all in the 90’s, but instead more in the 2000s. Despite LOL being present in the past it did not become a heavily used until the influence of social media networks. The meaning of LOL is changing drastically however. When it is being used now it is not being used because something is funny, but instead as a pragmatic particle. According to McWhorter (2013) LOL is not being used …show more content…
She used LOL in this conversation because she was annoyed. She did not feel that falling was funny at all but she used LOL to represent her annoyance and sarcasm.
I believe this is a perfect example of how the meaning and usage of LOL is changing. It is used for many reasons not just because something is funny. In fact, my sister mentioned that she never uses LOL when she thinks something is funny, “that’s what we have emoji’s for” she said. On the other hand, when I use LOL I believe they are for different reasons. I often use it when a situation is funny, but I also use it in a pragmatic sense. For me it depends on how well I know the person and the topic of a conversation. Sometimes I may type LOL but I would have a completely blank face. Not because I did not think it was, but because I just felt the need to use

Friend: Yeah Me: Y’all hiring lol I’m being serious Example 1 was a conversation between a friend and me. I think I used lol because the text came unexpected. I don’t think I used lol because it was funny that I was being missed, but I used it because it was awkward. I had just seen her a little over a week from when she sent the message and we talked all the time. I’m sure my friend didn’t think anything rude by it because she knows me personally and she knows my personality. I believed I used lol in a pragmatic particle sense by managing the conversation.

In example 2 I actually don’t think this conversation was funny at all. I was serious about finding a job and I was serious when I asked her. My friend knows I’m always talking about finding a job. I think I used lol to make the conversation less weird because it could come off awkward coming from me to ask her that question. I also think I used lol here to start a conversation. I texted her with a question and she responded dry so I thought lol could spice the conversation

“Humor appear’s to help people’s psychological and physical well being.” It says in Peter McGraw’s essay “The Importance of Humor Research.” It has been proven that it is good for your body to react in such a way to a funny situation but the psychological portion of it is hard to understand. When someone laughs, endorphins are released from the brain and are sent throughout the body creating the feeling of pleasure. It is a healthy alternative to any negative situation, whether it be negative or awkward it can be made easier with a joke here or…

"It's kind of funny because 'LOL' now means 'laugh out loud.' But when I was a kid, we would write 'LOL' on notes and stuff to our friends and it would mean 'Lot's of Love.' Whenever I read that, I still find myself thinking 'Lot's of Love' and then I'm like 'No, Laugh out Loud!' It's kind of funny," said Lane laughing (Lane 2010).…

Laughter is an experience unlike any other and it is hard to define as it is hard to perceive. But why I find something funny might not be the same reasons why others find such an idea, act, or situation funny or not funny. A sketch aired on May 10th of 2014 titled “Bikini Beach Party” via the television sketch series known as Saturday Night Live. This sketch was a parody, or imitation with an extreme exaggeration of the movie “Gidget” in 1959 in which a “girl-midget” discovers how to surf and also falls in love for the first time. However, I did not find the sketch “Bikini Beach Party” comical at all because, the lack of actual sketch writing, the utterly wrong dark humor, and my ability to indicate what was going to happen the entire time.…

    Reflection Of My Writing

Filled with the dramatic OMG’s, LOLs, WTF’s and several other abbreviations, most of the texts between my friends and I are very casual and straightforward. The use of “textspeak” plays a significant role. Michaela Cullington highlights the use of “textspeak” in her paper called “Texting and Writing,” where she discusses the use of textspeak and formal writing based on pre existing research as well as research of her own. Although Cullington’s sources don’t come across to be credible, I do agree with her findings to the extent that I can make a distinction between using textspeak and formal wiriting. The language I use and the way I text doesn't influence my writing academically or formally. There is a clear distinction between the two in terms of content and language. Since most of my friends from back home are at different colleges across the States, we’ve started talking a lot about college. More than that, I’ve noticed that the most common conversations between us are informing each other of various incidents and occurrences in our lives which also may be termed as “gossip” to be more specific. A lot of the times, I see myself asking my best friends for advice over text. It is definitely hard to stay in touch and constantly text each other since everyone is transitioning into the college life, but there is definitely a difference in the way we used to text each other back home and the way we text each other now, in terms of what we talk about. *INSERT LINK TO PICTURES* Being at Syracuse for about a month now, I’ve also made new friends here and text them frequently as well. However, they differ, because more than texting them, I also see them almost everyday and spend a lot of time with…
