Most tractor trailer drivers are long-haul drivers and operate trucks with a gross vehicle weight capacity, which is the combined weight of the truck, passengers, and cargo. The exceeding amount is 26,000 pounds. Truck drivers deliver goods on intercity routes. While they are driving, they sometimes drive from state to state to deliver goods. If you are a long-haul driver, you may be away from your home and family for days, if not weeks at a time. The average pay a year for long haul drivers is about $41,300. The pay per day is $19.87. Because of the long drives, most will get fast food. There is a 70 hour restriction over 8 days for most long haul truck drivers. Usually truck drivers get 6 or 7 miles per gallon of gas. Being a long haul driver gets you more money, even though you don’t get to be home every night. Truck drivers risk a lot including: leaving their family and home, risking their life, and possibly getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. All truck drivers have to take the DOT physical before driving. The DOT physical contains many test over health, such as blood pressure, drug test, alcohol test, etc. Some truck drivers are paid by the hour, while most are paid by the mile. Most drivers are expected to drive about 500 miles a day. That means they drive about 125,000 miles per year! Most driver seat areas in a semi truck are about 8x8 feet. Again, I chose this career to do a report on because this job interests me some and I may like to be a truck driver when I am older.
