As the baby boomers generation is aging, a growing number of the elderly population needs to be cared for. When the person needs help with physical or emotional needs for an extended period of time, it is called long term care. The required care might be as simple as walking, bathing dressing, using the bathroom, feeding, administering medication, and doing the laundry. An elderly might need the different cares mentioned for various reasons. It could be because of a disability, an illness, or a terminal condition. There are various institutions that provide long-term care. Personal care facilities, assistant living facilities, and skilled nursing facilities are just a few to mention. The continuum of institutional long-term care refers to the existence of the range of services provided by the different facilities and the transfer of patients between one type of care to the other. This is a great situation for those being cared for, as they can feel comfortable being in a home like environment. Some providers are even sending trained professionals to the elderly’s home to give the needed care. Services provided include making sure the environment is clean an safe, practicing hand washing, keeping the area free from health hazards, assisting patients in bathing, showers and toilet, preparing and feeding meals when necessary, ambulating, positioning- for bedridden clients, checking vital signs- temperature, blood pressure, weight, pulse.
