In the book Blue like Jazz there is a couple of conversion stories I would like to talk about. The first one comes from Chapter 4. It is the conversion of Millers friend Penny. Penny was a person who did not like Christians and Christianity based on the stereotypes that she had seen and the world has given to them. In the chapter it says that Penny wanted nothing to do with Christianity until she met a friend from her school. She went to college at the same place as miller, which is reed college, and after her freshman year she decided to study at a school in france. While there she was introduced to another student from Reed who she was very fond of and her…
The characteristics of American Jazz era of the 21st century closely resemble that of the European Classical era of the 19th-20th centuries. Jazz music is considered to be the free spirited spin off of it’s older sister classical music. “Classical composers envy the melodic verve, spontaneity and open emotion of improvisation; jazz musicians look to the larger scale, the coloristic and rhythmic flexibility and the respect given classical music.” Jazz music is defined by two fundamental elements of Classical music (the swing beat and the prevalence of improvisation). Since this is true, it indefinitely should be appreciated by critics almost as much as Classical music is. While the rhythms are not of classical nature, the harmonies and melodies of jazz stem directly from European music. In theory then, the boundaries between jazz and classical music seem to me to have been falsely erected. After all: What is jazz but ad-libbed classical music with a swing…
In the Women’s Brain, Gould tells of the misinformed data of a woman's brain through the use of rhetoric analysis such as detail, bias, logos, ethos, etc. He uses this information to gravitate toward scientist, to show how they mislead the information and need to improve on data. The author uses a judgmental tone when stating bias when he say, “In the most intelligent races, as among the Parisian,” when he is of such race.…
Throughout this course, I’ve been introduced to and learned about many events in history. One topic in particular that fascinates me is the era of the 1920s, also known as the Jazz Age. Following World War I, a movement began in America which caused dramatic political and social changes. One of the major changes included a new genre of music. With inventions such as the radio, Americans had easier access to music. Jazz was born, and with the help of new technology, became popular throughout the country.…
The legacy of Stax Records is a unique one that spans more than half a century. Stax Records is critical in American music history as it's one of the most popular soul music record labels of all time - second only to Motown in sales and influence, but first in gritty, raw, stripped-down soul music. In 15 years, Stax placed more than 167 hit songs in the Top 100 on the pop charts, and a staggering 243 hits in the Top 100 R&B charts. It launched the careers of such legendary artists as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Sam & Dave, Rufus & Carla Thomas, Booker T, & the MGs, and numerous others. Among the many artists who recorded on the various Stax Records labels were the Staple Singers, Luther Ingram, Wilson Pickett, Albert King, Big Star, Jesse Jackson, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, the Rance Allen Group, and Moms Mabley.…

The “Globalization of Jazz” is occurred when musicians from all around the world that were assimilating bebop and post-bop styles into the music of their culture in interesting and creative ways and creating new hybrid styles. Jazz had absorbed musical influences from other cultures and the reciprocal absorption of jazz into other parts of the world was…
America in the 1920s saw many instances of drastic change, impacting the lives of many Americans. The Roaring Twenties brought about many new inventions, wealth, and a new outlook on the common American lifestyle. With these new times came new influences and much change to the musical industry of jazz. This investigation will study the evolution of jazz music in the rapidly changing times of America in the 1920s and how the new American lifestyle and optimistic times influenced the music. Two sources that are used in this investigation are Jazz from its Origins to the Present by Lewis Porter, Michael Ullman, and Edward Hazell, and Chicago Jazz: A Cultural History by William Howland Kenney and published in 1993, which will be evaluated for their origins, purposes, values and limitations.…
The history of New Orleans is both expansive and complex. It is a city that prides itself in its cultural diversity. This was the result of many factors; The slave trade, exiled Acadians, and adventurers chasing easy money in an active port city are a few of the reasons why New Orleans is an American anomaly. One of New Orleans most noteworthy exports is jazz. First thought of as the “Devil’s Music” jazz eventually became immensely popular and well respected among many people, including for example, young people in the roaring twenties, when it was the popular music of its day.…
In summary, Jazz and modern music differ in many areas, while they are identical in others. When comparing the two you will notice that jazz music push the boundaries on societies restraints, while modern music does not shun provocative behavior. You will also see that the circumstances of our society will adjust what the purpose for the…
I started dancing before I can remember, but I have been told that I was just about three. I started out at a studio that I cannot remember, doing ballet and tap. Yet, because my entire class would have been so young it can hardly be considered dance, but rather a general physical activity with friends. When I was about to turn six my entire family moved, so I changed studios to the one I am at. I still only did tap and ballet for about three years, when I started to fall behind because everyone else was taking jazz and contemporary. So when I was going to be turning nine I started jazz and contemporary. They were all so different, but they all were quite similar (except for tap, that was pretty different). When I was asked which was my favorite I could not decide because I liked them all for different reasons. I liked jazz because I now…
African Americans utilized the variable form of jazz music to express their heritage, and emotions which have been stifled by slavery and racism. In his paper “Jazz: America’s Classical Music,” renowned jazz pianist Billy Taylor argues that jazz is “based on the Afro-American value system,” and that despite the systematic oppression of black culture by white society, was an effective means of communication between cultural lines (Taylor 24). Taylor suggests that the isolation of jazz performances to a setting which permits the “interaction between the jazz musician and the audience,” allowed jazz to develop into a particularly expressive musical art form (Taylor 24). He asserts that “the semantics of jazz convey thoughts, expressions, and feelings which are relevant to generations of Americans, [allowing jazz’s influence] to transcend ethnic boundaries” while altering the national culture (Taylor 24). This recognition of the development of a communicative musical art rooted in black culture allows one to observe the impact of jazz on the African American identity.…
The Jazz Age was a defining point in the history of America. This point in time defined the clear division between the older and younger generations of America. The Jazz Age was more than just a time period but a cultural movement. Although African-Americans receive credit for the introduction of this music into America, it had quickly expanded to the white middle class and further erupted from there. The introduction of this new style of music resulted in the younger generation of America at the time to become rebellious and less inclined to follow in their ancestors footsteps culture wise (Boundless). Jazz music, in its beginnings, was most often played in cities such as New York, Chicago, and New Orleans. Each city boasted its own unique…

We've all had at least once in life thought that we wonder how the future will look like? How will we be over 40 years? How will our planet look like? Or just how it will be tomorrow? These are questions which, in my opinion, we grind every day.…
