Lord of Da Flies
Essay structure
Introduction

The introduction sets the scene for the whole essay. For a 1500 word essay, this could be a 150 word paragraph. The purpose of the introduction is to identify the topic, your point of view and the main reasons for your response. Often this paragraph includes:
•An introductory sentence or two related directly to the question.
•A definition or explanation of a key term, cited from your discipline.
•A clear statement of the focus of the essay or the position being argued, your thesis statement.
•Sentences that give a clear idea of what the essay will be about (content) and the direction (scope) the essay will take. Body

Paragraphs in the body of the essay show your discussion of the main ideas supporting your position or response to the question. Ideas from the scholarly literature give credibility and weight to your argument.

Each paragraph should link with the previous paragraph and may include:
•A topic sentence: a statement of the main idea of the paragraph.
•Explanation or supporting evidence from the scholarly readings.
•Further evidence from your reading to deepen your discussion.
•Application of ideas to a scenario or through the use of an example.
•Your discussion of, comment on and evaluation of these ideas.
•A concluding sentence that brings the paragraph to a close. Conclusion

The purpose of the conclusion is to summarise and make final evaluative comments. It is important to refer back to the essay question.

This paragraph includes:
•A brief summary of the main ideas presented in the essay.
•Confirmation of the thesis included in the introduction.
•Final evaluative comments on the relative importance of the arguments.
•Comments on the ongoing significance of the topic as an issue that needs further discussion or investigation.

At the beginning of the novel, the boys are being evacuated from England by plane, presumably to keep them safe from the Cold War, which is in the future. The term "Reds" is mentioned (possibly giving the notion that the war was against the Soviets). However, there was quite a large amount of tension between the Soviet Union and the UK, or more particularly, Stalin and Churchill, during World War II, so "Reds" could simply show the British boys' scorn for the Soviets. The island becomes a microcosm of the self-destructive society that sent them away. Their failure to create stability and decency mimics the larger failure of the grownups to do the same, and there is real ambiguity as to whether or not the children's rescue by the naval cruiser at the end of the novel represents any real end to their danger.…

    Lord of Flies

Musician Annie Lennox once said, “Humankind seems to have an enormous capacity for savagery, for brutality, for lack of empathy, for lack of compassion.” This quote introduces the idea that humans have a brutal nature and are drawn away from the civilized ways of life because of it. When true human nature is allowed to be seen, these savagely characteristics are made visible and these other courteous ways of life are forgotten. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the boys choose to follow Jack’s violent and fearful leadership, abandoning Ralph’s authority based on order and civilized norms, proving that rule based on savagery appeals to mans dark human nature and will overshadow leadership based on civility to the detriment of society. This realization is shown in the novel when, at the beginning, all of the boys follow the same rules that have been put on them for their whole lives, but as the story progresses Jack follows his savagery human instincts and some boys follow. At the end of the story all of the boys true selves are exposed and savagery and brutality have consumed the boys.…
