Rules are necessary for a civilized society because without rules everyone would be crazy. The true savage of men would show and no one would act appropriate. After reading Lord of the Flies and related articles, the influence of rules on human behavior is crucial because it keeps us civilized. Being civilized is important to keep order in our society.
In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, the main character tries to keep order in tact with the group of young boys because he knows this will keep them sane and civilized. Civilization has come a long way from what it used to be. Man is savage and has instinct to survive. Survival is the main goal in life, and man will do whatever it takes to live. …show more content…
In Lord of the Flies the goal is survival, and the boys each try their hardest to live. Deep down they all knew they’d kill to live, even if they didn’t want to admit it. Savagery eventually takes over their minds and the true nature of man is shown.
If we didn’t have rules or government, society would fail and the population would be a lot smaller.
Everyone would do whatever it takes to survive, even if that meant killing. Man’s instinct to survive will always overcome other things when it comes down to it. Consequences are also necessary for civil society. People follow rules to escape consequences. Punishment is a good threat to get people to follow the law. Jail is necessary because loneliness is isolating and isolation is scary for man. Being isolated causes a lot more thoughts and eventually your thought process changes. It can brainwash you and you could even become suicidal. According to brittanica.com, “A broader problem is that of determining which ostensibly fundamental human dispositions and traits are natural and which are the result of some form of learning or socialization.” Even smaller punishments like suspension in a school system are worthy because they teach lessons. Parents are a big part of rules and following the law because if a child is raised to follow the rules, they will more than likely stay that way. Another big impact on rules is home life. Not only how children are raised, but how loved and cared for they were. A child will want attention and seek it in the wrong ways if it doesn’t get enough in its home. Acting out is a very common way for children to get attention. They think if they rebel against the rules people will pay more attention to them, but in the end they just end up being punished again. The same vicious cycle repeats
itself.
Lord of the Flies is a great example of why we need order in our society. The true nature of man will always be inside of us and we need law and order (and I’m not talking SVU) to keep it contained. Rules and consequences are necessary for the way we evolved. We used to be animals with only one goal. Now we have many goals in life, but one of those goals is still to survive. We understand death is a part of life, but we try to avoid it. Many people also believe in afterlife, but still want to survive. This is not simply because we all have the same opinion on life and living. This is because we all have an instinct and will to live. It is in our blood. It can be defined as human nature. There are many examples of human nature in the world. In fact it is all around us. We become accustomed to routines and everyday activities that we forget about our true nature.
