is Merridew who is very out spoken and wants to be in charge. After the boys decide to make Ralph in charge Ralph, Merridew, and Simon go to explore the island and on their way back they decide to catch something to eat but when they do Merridew can’t kill the pig. Analysis: speculative response- When the author mentions "Not them.
Didn’t you hear what the pilot said? About the atom bomb? They're all dead." (Golding 16). It made me think that the plane that crashed was trying to get away from something that was happening and maybe the reason for the crash was that someone tried blowing it out of the sky and kill the people on board. I also think that the "something" they were running from was a war between two countries and all the people on the plane were from a war-zone trying to escape.
Conflict: external- The one conflict in this chapter that stood up to me is the man vs. society conflict between Piggy and the rest of the boys. This conflict has been a man vs. society conflict just because Piggy is a little chubbier then the rest of them and he has asthma so he is a little slower. This effected Piggy because he felt that Ralph betrayed him because he told him not to tell anyone that people back home called him Piggy because he was tired of people calling him that and teasing him. It also made Piggy feel sad and it also made him feel the way he did at school back
him. Maslow or Freud- The part when Ralph, Simon, and Merridew go to explore the island and on their way back, they decide to find some food. While they are looking they discover a pig that is stuck and they decide to kill it for food, even though they don’t end up killing it they still think about for their own goof. Which shows the physiological need in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs because physiological needs have to do with the maintenance of the human body and if something is wrong then nothing else matters. That is exactly what happened when they were about to kill the poor little pig because they were hungry and not even caring that the pig is an animal too just like us humans.
Important quotation- One important quote from chapter 1 is "Where's the man with the megaphone?"(Golding 7). This is important because it is one of the first things Piggy says to Ralph after they find each other which makes you think a lot about what he is talking about and who is talking about. This also affects the plot because they start to remember the events that happened before they crashed and they let the readers know what is really going on. Also when they are remembering the events they realize that there is no one around them, so you also find out that the man with megaphone isn't on the island but somewhere the boys came from.
