Passage: “Inside the floating cloak he was tall, thin, and bony; and his hair …show more content…
was red beneath the bald cap. His face crumpled and freckled, and ugly without silliness” (pg.20) Jack is described and seems to be very awkward and uncomfortable. The author makes the readers truly paint a picture of what Jack looks like.
Log #2: pg.22-43
Summary: After learning everyone’s names, the boys decide on choosing a captain and the majority vote for Ralph.
Ralph organizes everyone into separate groups and assigns them with different tasks. Jack didn’t win the “chief” role, so he is a little upset, but Ralph told him he could be in charge of the choir boys because he already had some form of authority over them. One of the groups assigned for exploring the island and hunting food consisted of Ralph, Jack, and Simon. They trek through the island until they finally come across their first animal sighting, a baby pig. Jack hesitates to kill the baby pig because he is scared of the large amounts of blood, but doesn’t want to be embarrassed by the other boys so he makes excuses saying he just “didn’t know” where to stab it.
Passage: “The three boys rushed forward and Jack drew his knife again with a flourish. He raised his arm in the air. There came a pause, a hiatus, the pig continued to scream and the creepers to jerk, and the blade continued to flash at the end of a bony arm.” (pg.31) This passage reveals that Jack had hesitation when it came to killing the pig and he was truly timid inside showing that he has a soft spot and may not be as manly as everyone thinks he
is.
Log #3: pg.44-62
Summary: After the pig has been found, the boys decide as a group that they need to start hunting for more pigs as their source of food. Jack says he will take on this role, but gets yelled at because the other boys think he is trying to avoid other jobs like building secure huts. Later on, at one of the meetings, a small boy is given the conch shell and a chance to speak, where he describes that there is a “beastie” living on the island inside of the jungle. This sparks fear in a lot of the boys.
Passage: “The glittering sea rose up, moved apart in planes of blatant impossibility; the coral reef and the few stunted plants that clung to the more elevated parts would float up into the sky, would quiver,be plucked apart, run like raindrops on a wire or be an odd succession of mirrors.” (pg.58) The ocean was continuous and looking out into it carried many different possibilities of what could be out there. The island carries a lot of distinct features that are described in very beautiful manor by the author. If I was stuck on this island, I honestly wouldn’t mind too much.
