Even though Simon is slightly younger than the other characters in the book, he is wise, spiritual, and pure. A reason I can not see myself being like Simon is because I would not be able to look at the situation of being stuck on the island as intelligently as he does. Simon was able to find peace and serenity while the other boys resorted to savagery. Towards the end of Simon’s life, he was sitting in front of the pig’s head that Rodger brutally killed. Simon heard the pig’s head, the Lord of the Flies, say to him, “There isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the Beast. . . . Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill! . . . You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I’m the reason why it’s no go? Why things are the way they are?” (Golding 132/133). This quote shows how wise and mature Simon is. The pig was not literally speaking to Simon, but it was his own thoughts and the inner beast inside him speaking. Simon coming to the conclusion of the beast being the uncivilized and evil part of everyone is a realization that is beyond my wisdom.
