Hour 1
Lord of the Flies
As many know, the roots of human nature contain both good and evil. An exceptional novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding portrays the depth of human nature and our extent of good and evil within us. Despite the centuries passed, our human nature stands parallel to those seen the in the novel. Many elements of the novel can be seen in today's society in struggles of power, teamwork and cooperation, and the darker side of human nature. Power has always been a factor in human greed and it presents itself in many different forms. Lord of the Flies illustrated a leader faced with opposition and his attempt at gaining support of the members of his group while struggling to regain his power. In modern day's society, we see many of these similar issues--such as our government. Every day, opposing parties fight to achieve support for their ideas, every four years, Presidential candidates fight to gain citizen's votes, and we annually vote for Representatives. Many examples from the novel point to the importance of teamwork and cooperation. On the island, without cooperation a leader would not emerge, without teamwork, the fire would die out and food would not be gathered for everyone. Even in the 20th century today, teamwork and cooperation is crucial in order to build our society. Communities must come together to create infrastructure, schools, government, and a life for one another. Today we walk outside and are able to see where teamwork and cooperation has gotten us--from buildings, to schools, and parks, to roads. Imagine trying to accomplish this individually... Hence the saying "Two heads are better than one." Humans are capable of many things, including evil. We are not perfect we are built on our flaws. But the evil
