adequate shelter and is vital to safely establishing themselves on the island. Ralph and Simon build their shelters for the littluns showing the importance of older boys looking out for the younger kids. “If it rains like when we dropped in we’ll need shelters all right”. Pg. 52. This quote shows real world order balance that needs to be shown by the boys. Utilizing their resources on the island to build shelter is fundamental to surviving the long days. The littluns do not have a developed mindset to endure the challenges coming to living on the island. The older boys need to maintain a robust social order on the island by teaching the littluns how because in reality older wiser people look out for the blossoming youthful generation.
An important symbol of authority, the conch was the piece to control conflict to bring the boys together without yelling at each other to settle controversies. Whenever the conch would be blown all the boys were brought together and to tune in intently to whoever held the conch. This method not only could restore order but grants a freedom of speech to any kid. “ No we’re having a meeting”. Pg. 20. The first time Ralph blew the conch most of the other boys responded. Nothing else would bring the boys to assemble. Without of device to keep order balanced the boys would tear themselves apart of all the egos on the island. Different ideas would clash, without a true intelligent leader to guide them the conch gave them the ability to determine the leadership in all of them. Ralph was the strongest in terms of authority. He tried his best to please all the boys on the island fairly. However, the strength in numbers overpowered social order to create chaos. For instance, when the conch was obliterated Ralph was literally being hunted like a wild animal. Order was turning into pandemonium, most of the boys forgot their true main objective is to get off the island. Lastly, the conch is a large factor in keeping social order on the island since the boys always respond and obey what the speaker wants from them.
Following the rules keeps everything constant.
In order to have a peaceful constant civil society everyone must adhere to the specific decrees placed on their community to succeed. The boys wanted to be rescued and what kept them from losing opportunities with ships and maybe more is their pressing social order. By keeping the fire going, establishing shelters, and creating a home like hut is necessary to holding the social order at a constant. Some of the boys sincerely care of the good of the other boys like Ralph and Simon. Although, Jack’s character stands against the standards of the rules placed upon them. Finally, keeping a normal social order going will assist these helpless lost boys be rescued and learn about how severe it is to coexist with each
other.
