Analysis of Lorde Concert
I am analyzing the concert of young artist Lorde, who performed at Echostage in Northeast DC. Chris Richards talks about Lorde’s weird style in her performance, but also her lyrical relevance to the audience in which she is performing too. Richards talks about how Lorde’s age is not the only thing that makes her different and stand out from other artist, but also how her songs can relate to her audience.
Lorde’s real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, she is seventeen years old and has a bright future ahead of her in the music industry. Lorde being so young gives the ability to be able to relate to her young audience. Richards states “The only thing that makes Lorde different from anyone else her age is her ability to straighten those knotted feelings into articulate, evocative, radio-colonizing pop hits.”, which is one of the biggest things that puts Lorde above other artist in the industry right now. When teenagers listen to her music and hear her lyrics; they realize that she is going through the same issues they are. Her audience can directly relate to Lorde without actually having to know her. completely agree with Richards’s statement that she can articulate the knotted feelings of the teenage years. Lorde has a very gothic and strange way about her, and sometimes her audience can be put off by it.
Over time her audience tends to look past her strange exterior and can’t help but sing along. Richards says “ Her lyric sheet is filled with common teenage concerns: the body, the future, mobility, boredom, isolation, ambition, dreams.”, which is exactly what teenagers are going through. No matter how weird Lorde is and how gothic her performance might be, the audience tends to get lost in the lyrics and starts singing and jamming along. I am guilty of this, I have definitely been put off by Lorde’s weird exterior and gothic ways, but yet can not stop listening to her music because of how good it is and how much I have been able to relate to her through her
music. Richards talks about how Lorde’s age is not the only thing that makes her different and stand out from other artist, but also how her songs can relate to her audience. Lorde definitely has a weird way of performing her songs, no doubt. What an audience member has to do when attending a performance by Lorde is not only watch her, but listen and really hear the lyrics of her music. Richards also states “ Because isn’t everyone’s adolescence a tangle of wild curiosity, vivid emotions and ferocious opinions?”, which is why the audience looks past her gothy and strange exterior and can’t help but sing along to her music. Lorde is a teen sensation who is on the rise and is known for her strange and gothic performance.
