Lost the Temper
The Day I Lost My Temper
“Ring......”, the shrill ringing of the school bell pierced the air, bringing to an end the silence that reigned the class for the past fourty minutes. As the stalwart figure of the Mathematics teacher stepped out of the class, there was a sense of relief for Mr. Siva was a strict disciplinarian who would not tolerate any of our pranks.
There were squeals and peals of laughter amidst the din of conversation. It was at this moment that Seng Chye bustled to the front of the class. Easily the most detestable boy in the class, Seng Chye was an incorrigible prankster whose impish behaviour was a source of irritation and annoyance to most of us, especially the girls. As his diminutive figure inched his way to where I was seated, he had the familiar mischievous grin which revealed a set of yellowish protruding teeth. As he approached, he was grinning from ear to ear. Then, in the twinkling of an eye, he put something on my desk. As he bolted out of the classroom, I could hear hysterical screams. Perplexed as I was as to the cause of this sudden flurry of excitement, I knew that Seng Chye was up to mischief It was then that I saw the slimy, creepy creature staring at me with its moist, beady eyes. All of a sudden with a husky croak and a single, giant leap, the four - legged creature landed on my lap. I was frozen with fear. Then, when the truth finally sank in, I let out a few ear – splitting screams that echoed along the corridor. All around me, I could hear hilarious laughter while I was consumed by bitterness and anger. The joke was at my expense. As I seethed in anger and hurled verbal abuses at the top of my voice, Seng Chye cowered in silence. His face has turned as red as a beetroot and he had guilt written all over his face. The pandemonium that resulted was enough to catch the attention of the discipline master who stalked into the class. Seng Chye and I were summoned to his room. Each of us took turns to relate the

As I observed his ghastly shadow I saw that he was over 8 feet tall. He had huge claws so each on looked like a dagger itself, ripping and tearing at the flesh of my fellow companions. He had long horns that curled inwards like a rams horns. He had a long, scaly like tail that swung and whipped in the air followed by a flop on the ground in a joyless motion, as if it too, like the monster, was thrilled to taste the succulent human blood flowing over the tongue and trickling down the throat.…

In this story the characters frequently respond to situations in unexpected and illogical ways. For example, when Mr. Chiu and his bride were sitting at the table, the policeman threw tea at their feet. Another example, is at the end of the story, Mr. Chiu gets his revenge by eating at four different restaurants and infecting the city with hepatitis. Ha Jin uses a lot of comic absurdity in this story. Ha Jin's comedy is persistent but deceptive. Similarly, his description of life in China under communism is made up of amusing incidents that lead to a deadly outcome. The tone of the story is directly connected to the style. At times it is humorous, due to the silliness of the events. At other times it quieter and calmer. The story irritated me a little because I couldn't understand or believe how bizarre the policemen were…

When a tea cup came flying in his direction, Mr. Chiu assumes it was being thrown at him or his wife. As an educated, young professional Mr. Chiu has the nerve to confront the local authority figures who he thought had slighted him and his wife. He uses his education and language to portray the officers as the villains and wrong-doers in front of a crowd of people. When he is arrested and brought before the Chief of the Investigation Bureau, he continues the tirade he was not allowed to finish on the street. He also interrupts the one person who had real control over his freedom and proceeds to use his education as a verbal weapon against the authority figure. Even when Mr. Chiu was told that he had no evidence, no witnesses in his favor and shown the written statements of witnesses there at the scene, Mr. Chiu vehemently continues his argument in a disrespectful manner. The authorities may or may not have handled the initial confrontation poorly but after this barrage…

“Wrong answer Laurran, do it again,” Mrs. Taylor raised her voice at me. The room went silent. Nobody was talking or moving, to scared to get scolded by Mrs. Taylor. I always wondered who would want to marry her, or how she treated her kids at home. I honestly feel bad for her two kids if she treated her own students this way.
