THEME ESSAY
In the Lord Of The Flies, the author, William Golding communicates a theme of fear and that the real battle, and the beast , is inside of all the boys in the book. That the boys have to fight the beast and the fear inside of themselves.
In chapter eight, “Gift For The Darkness ,” Simon, a character in the book, encounters the pig’s head on a stick, also known as the Lord Of The Flies. The Lord Of The Flies tells him, “fancy thinking the beast is something you can hunt and kill! ” (pg143 ) Here, the Lord Of The Flies was telling him that they had no idea that the beast they are supposedly “hunting down,” is inside of them. Living in their very own bodies and mind, the beast also tells him, “you knew didn't you? i'm a part of you.” (143) There, the beast is telling him that Simon knows that there is something deep down inside of the boys. In chapter eight, “Gift For The Darkness,” the boys offer the beast a peace offering. they offer a pigs head to the beast “this head is for the beast, its a gift”(pg 137) hoping that it will leave them alone because they were still really scared and had not overcome their own fear yet. After they offered the gift to the beast the boys were still scared, so they ran off in case the beast showed up to collect the gift.
In chapter nine their fear of the beast finally overcomes them and causes them to kill Simon. they were all chanting “Kill the Beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! ” they always chant their chant and dance their dance, but whenever they thought the beast (Simon) is crawling to them, they all got scared and started to attack the beast. they
