Odysseus and his men (also known as the Ithankans) landed on the Aeaean island. The Aeaean island was ruled by Aeolus, the god of the winds. The Ithankans were welcomed and stayed there for a month. After one month the Ithankans began to depart to Ithka. Before they departed Aeolus gave Odysseus a bag of winds. This bag would help Odysseus and his men on their journey home. Odysseus did not tell his fellow men what the bag contains. As Odysseus and his men were arriving at Ithka Odysseus fell asleep after driving the ship for nine days. While he was asleep the men opened the bag thinking it was some type of treasure. When the bag was opened winds rushed everywhere and blew the ship back undoing the nine days of sailing. Odysseus sailed to…

In lines 30-55 in the “Odyssey”, Odysseus is posed with the threat of the Lotus Eaters. To illustrate, the Lotus Eaters offer his men the Lotus, a flower, but it makes those who eat it forget who they are, “Browsing on/That native bloom, forgetful of their homeland.”(Line 46&47). This provides Odysseus and his crew with threatening obstacle in their stay on the island. The Lotus was a problem because if they ate the flower, they were doomed to stay on the island, never wanting go back home. To demonstrate Odysseus’ leadership, he drags three of his forgotten men onto the ships and tells the rest of the crew “No one taste/ The Lotus, or you lose your hope of home.” (Lines 51&52). This illustrates Odysseus’ leadership skills when posed with a…

After driven by a storm through rough seas, we discover the land of the Lotus Eaters, people who devour the lotus: fruit and flower. We dispatched onto the coast of the land and mingled with the natives. No direct threat to our men, our warriors, purely the lotus to eat. The Lotus Eaters told us of the delicacy, how fortunate we would be if we took a bite of just a little bit. Only one man did not eat the saccharine flower. We immediately forgot about our wants to return, our only thoughts being to consume the Lotus.…

The Odyssey, penned by Homer, portrays the dangers of temptation by his creation of the Sirens and the Lotus Eaters. Both the Sirens and the Lotus Eaters “[show] no will to do [them] harm” (line #95). Though these creatures show no ill-will toward the crew, they both ultimately lead the crew down a treacherous path of temptation. Some of Odysseus's crew succumbs to the gentle lure and abandon all attempts to see home again by walking out the path of temptation. In “weaving a haunting song,” the Sirens draw the men into temptation by using physical beauty (line #691).…

First in the beginning it said that Odysseus was thrown out of the ship that just tells you that something is going on there is something that someone wanted to do because if they wanted to throw the king overboard. Either they wanted to get rid of the king so they can be on top or they wanted it to look like the king went missing wait and then have power over the people. This is Helios, the sun god’s island. Upon stopping on the island, the men are very hungry and are looking for food. Odysseus carefully warns them not to touch Helios’s cattle or they will pay dearly for it. While away from his men, Odysseus falls asleep in the shade of a tree. While he is asleep his men disobey him and kill Helios’s cattle for food. Afterward, Helios pleads to Zeus to make Odysseus’s men pay for harming and eating his cattle. Zeus will fulfill his wish and “throw down one white-hot bolt, and make splinters of their ship in the wide dark sea.” Following this, the men set to sea when the boat is indeed struck by lightning and kills everyone but Odysseus who floats alone for days until greeted by Calypso on Ogygia Island. If the men would have obeyed Odysseus, they would not be dead, and Odysseus would not have to stay with Calypso for seven…

This island is home to the sacred Cattle of the Sun. After enduring many hardships caused by the Gods and also by mortals, Odysseus finally gets to the island. Odysseus and his comrades have been thrown off course and are at a loss for resources, the main one being food. Odysseus knows that although it is tempting, eating the Cattle of the Sun would be a lethal mistake. He warns his starving men, and they promise not to eat these majestic creatures. Odysseus and his men are desperate for food and shelter, so he “struck inland,/ up the island, there to pray to the gods./ If only one might show me [Odysseus] some way home!/Crossing into the heartland, clear of the crew,/ I rinsed my hands in a sheltered spot, a windbreak,/ but soon as I’d prayed to all the gods who rule Olympus,/down on my eyes they poured a sweet, sound sleep...” (281 lines 358-364). After going through all of the experiences that he had gone through, Odysseus knows that only the Gods could help him. Although Odysseus has finally realized that he has to pray to the Gods, they pour a “sweet, sound sleep” upon him. Odysseus knows that he has to be clear of his crew, so he goes to the center of the island, despite how exhausted and hungry he is to prove to the Gods that he is willing to do whatever it takes to ask them for forgiveness of his previous actions and find a way to get home. It is very hard for Odysseus to give up his pride and ego, and acknowledge the fact that only the Gods can help him find a way home. When he finally does pray to every single God and does what he is supposed to, ironically, the Gods still make Odysseus sleep, giving his men time to eat the Cattle of the Sun and anger the Sun God, Helios. Unfortunately, his actions are in vain, but they start to teach him the value of showing humility. Odysseus showing humility towards…

Homer compares the Trojans disturbing the Greeks to the boys disturbing the hornets in order to show how the Trojans have no knowledge of who they were messing with, like the boys and fools, in attacking the Greeks. Homer says, ” infuriating the hive-the little fools- until the insects become a menace to all” (16.268-272). This essentially illustrates that the greeks are fools and like boys by not evaluating the outcome of what would be certain to happen when they decide to attack the black ships. Instead they are , driven by impulse. According to Homer, the insects, “attack any traveller who happens by, swarming out in defense of their brood”. The insects, which are the Greeks, become infuriated and turn into a hazard. The insects ,just as…

    Slaughter In The Odyssey

Homer approves of Odysseus’ revenge on the suitors because Odysseus protects his wife and home from those who betrayed him. Although subtly hinted, Homer justifies Odysseus’ rage as Athena is sent in the form of Mentor to keep Odysseus on his path of rage, reminding him of his battle with the Trojans and his combat strength, which allowed him to proceed with his slaughter (Od. 22.214-215). Although necessary for Athena to appear to build the confidence of the suitors to attack Telemachus and Odysseus, the goddess’ rage against Odysseus as he asks her to help bear arms (22.246) seems as if Homer is trying to communicate to us that he agrees with Odysseus’ cause. In the manner of how Athena speaks to Odysseus in Homer’s writing, it is apparent that she is dissatisfied with Odysseus’ request as she states that although he has finally returned home, he doesn’t have the spirit to destroy the suitors on his own (22.233-246).…
