Summary
This excerpt from Love and Marriage is a relatable comedy by Bill Cosby that draws people together through relatable experiences. He tells us of his first love Charlene, and how he fell in love with her, she dumped him, and then he went on a mission geared towards revenge. It’s delightfully comical to read his reminiscing and retelling of how clever he thought himself to be. We can all relate in some way to this naïve perception of love. This is how Bill Cosby shows people how much they have in common while emphasizing how hurt pride can lead one to resort to crazy things.
Illuminator
There were too many delightfully amusing aspects of this story to count. One of these that I found extremely amusing was when he stated, “ I was convincing myself that Charlene and I had been meant for each other: She was a liar and I was a thief. Two such people, who had been so deeply in love, should have had a chance to keep torturing each other… ” This really emphasizes the ridiculousness of naïve young love infatuations. He also states, “ Sigmund Freud once said, ‘ What do women want? ‘ The only thing I have learned in fifty-two years is that women want men to stop asking dumb questions like that. “I found the simple humorous irony of this quote delightful, and it indeed contains an undertone of truth.
Discussion Director What does Bill Cosby teach us about most men? He shows that men are always left puzzled by women. We learn that Bill’s experience with Charlene changes his thought about women and after his eventful evening he finds out the hard way that you can’t be a smartass with them. Personally, I think that women are like rubric’s cubes, I’ve never solved one. Therefore, girls are very confusing and complicated.
