Eminem’s lyrics describe an abusive relationship between a man and a woman from the perpetrators point of view. His lyrics explain that he is well aware that his actions are wrong, but he is not willing to let her go, thus, he uses his dominance in the relationship to force her into submitting, and remaining in physical and emotional turmoil.
This is clearly noticeable in the later stages of the song, when Eminem states: “If she ever tries to leave again I’ma tie her to the bed and set this house on fire.” This line dictates to the listeners the disturbing mental process associated with power and domestic violence, and also allows the listeners to comprehend the masochistic nature of such relationships.
Critics report that Eminem has perfectly captured the cycle of domestic violence, allowing him to effectively draw the sympathetic listeners further into the story. This allows the lyrics to connect on a personal level with some listeners who may be experiencing a similar situation, or know someone who is. Repeatedly we hear the perpetrator promising that these acts of violence will never happen again, and that he will change because he loves her. But really all these statements are blatant lies, and in no time he will be back up to his old tricks.
