Extra Credit – Loving Lampposts
“Loving Lampposts” is a story about the struggle to find ways to cope and deal with autism. There are many obstacles that come with finding out your child has autism, and there is only so many things you can do to make them fit into a normal society. Sam, a toddler who has just been diagnosed with having autism, is the son of the director who is trying to find ways to cope with this problem. There are many people in the video that discuss their struggles with autism and how they have dealt with it. People think of autism as an epidemic that will make it so the carrier cannot interact in normal situations. Throughout history, many people did not know what autism was or where it came from. Some people thought it came from a vaccination, bad mothers, or food. The truth was that no one knows where it came from. However, with research, there have been ways to suppress the symptoms so the carrier can interact normally. Cutting out certain foods such as milk or vegetables can sometimes help with the symptoms. For two brothers, Eric and Robbie, were diagnosed with autism but Eric has recently lost his diagnosis. Their mother began with cutting milk out of their diet which helped dramatically. Many people have said that the parents should attempt to stop this obsession because it could worsen his symptoms, but if it’s the something that makes him happy, then why stop? For many autistic children, they use items, movies, or songs, to express their feelings, emotions, and words. In some cases, people with autism can stop speaking.
