Low-Income High School Students: A Case Study
Lack of physical activity continues to affect young individuals, especially high school students. This may be due to the fact that there is lack of resources available to provide opportunities for physical activity. The lack of physical activity has shown to affect low-income communities. According to Cadzow, Chambers, and Sandell (2015), “low-income high school students lacked knowledge about fitness and nutrition, lack of sufficient time to meet state physical activity and physical education (PE) requirements, and lack of non-traditional motivating equipment and an aligned curriculum that supported PE standards.” The purpose of this case study is to create a program to give the low-income high school students a variety of opportunities to participate in physical activity. For example, offering an afterschool program that promotes non-competitive types of activities will allow, not only athletes, but also all students to participate in the activity allowing an impact on a larger population size. In addition, having trained physical educators will promote correct movement patterns. Specifically, an open gym with a trained physical education staff member will allow students to participate with a trained supervisor that can offer correct movements and techniques. It is imperative training is offered for physical education teachers so they can become comfortable with providing physical activity opportunities for students, including This strategies for properly managing movement (Heidorn and Centeio, 2012). The situation that will be evaluated in this analysis will be; is there a region of the United States in which childhood obesity tends to be more prominent? This will be done to show areas in which the Government, insurance companies and healthcare institutions should focus campaigns for healthy living to reduce future healthcare cost. The data that will be utilized to answer this business question will be the percent of children ages ten to seventeen that are overweight or obese in each of the fifty states. The states will then be categorized into their respective regions of East, South, Midwest, and West. It is important to look into the regions to see if there is a trend of obesity within a region, as this region should be the focal point of Government, insurance companies, and healthcare institutions to launch a healthy living campaign. Conducting such campaigns in a region of most need will in the long run, reduce healthcare cost because children will mature into health conscious individual with less preventable diseases.…

Observation has proven that the number of fast food restaurants in the area and the prices of cigarettes and alcohol are some reasons for obesity in communities (Yen, Zhuo & Eastwood, 2009). The first step to reducing obesity and improving health would be to increase the prices of the goods that promote unhealthy behavior. Increasing community awareness is important in fighting the obesity epidemic in Huntington West Virginia. Overweight or obese individuals need support through different programs that focus on their disease. According to the CDC (2011) “The Healthy Eating Active Living Convergence Partnership is focused on transportation and food systems to develop active living environments and improve access to healthy foods, and the Common Community Measures for Obesity Prevention also works to hinder obesity through policy and environmental measures” (p. 2). The Early Assessment of Programs to and Policies Prevent Childhood Obesity 's priority is to focus on communities where low-income children live by improving eating habits and physical activity levels at home and school. The CDC 's Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity focuses on environmental changes, improving eating habits and exercise habits in obese individuals, although individuals have to take advantage of these…

One concern Haygood and I have observed in these small towns is a lack of recreational venues. The lack of recreational venues seems to directly affect obesity among children in small towns. It appears that in today’s society with a lack of recreational venues children are retreating inside their homes where they, sit in front of the television, computer, or video games for hours on end. While these activities are keeping them entertained, they require little to no physical activity. While most may wonder why not just visit a neighboring town that has some kind of recreational venues, lack of resources whether it be time, or most often lack of money prevents many families from traveling even a short distance.…

Exercising is a huge factor on staying healthy. A vastly amount of kids in America are not participating in physical education. While childhood obesity seems like a simple personal problem, it has a direct effect on society, the environment, the economy and the children both directly and indirectly associated with it. First off, the children who suffer from obesity have multiple health issues along with the emotional pain of feeling worthless and immovable (Soechtig). Next, the effects on the environment from obesity include incessant parent-child interactions at home focused on eating healthier foods, plus schools’ need for interceding in pushing more healthy and natural food choices for lunch, plus a need to get kids outside longer for more exercise. The effects on communities include budgetary spending to make food more affordable and outside play areas more accessible (Karnik). The effects of obesity on the economy include the depressing possibility that children growing up obese tend to be obese as adults, causing many to be unable to work need welfare and other governmental programs (Smith). Obesity in children and its relationship to unclean air and environmental health issues has become head of health concerns in the United States, as the rate of climate change continues to increase. The rising percentage of obesity in children is beginning to dominate minority and low income communities around the United States, while environmental issues stand present to lend a helping hand. Some environmental concerns may reflect the following; lack of neighborhood recreation facilities available to the youth within those communities, local walking and bike trails, food and air quality, water contamination, and rising levels of the heat and sea. Climate change will always be a factor of risk to the environment as it is currently and will continue to affect our children’s health throughout their lifetime and the future of the world. Nationally 15% of children are affected by childhood obesity which refers to having a body mass index higher than the 95th percentile, as well as certain communities such as the east part of Harlem, New York having childhood obesity rates over 25%. With conclusive evidence of unequal exposure to illness and chemicals, this raises concern in the direction of an environmental justice issue. When speaking on the reflection of obesity, children that are obese tend to suffer from diabetes, cancer, gallbladder disease, hypertension, liver disease and even…
