This essay will describe a problem faced by a character in two short stories, Lucky Lips by Paul Jennings and It Used To Be Green Once by Patricia Grace. In Lucky Lips Marcus’s problem is the fact that he has never been kissed by a girl. In It Used To Be Green Once the problem is the car. This essay will describe the problem, how they (the characters) tried to solve their problem and the outcome or consequences of their actions.
The first story Lucky Lips addresses the problem of Marcus, a 16 year old who had never been kissed. He do all he could, he would take a girl on a date, be nice, be kind, do everything but to no avail. Not one kiss, ‘it was maddening’. In It Used To Be Green Once the problem was their old broken car, ‘the car had been red once, because you could still see some patches of red paint here or there’. For the children the car wasn’t that bad until their mum started going shopping every Wednesday.
Marcus (Lucky Lips) tried to solve his problem by going to see Ma Scritchet, the town psychic, Ma Scritchet new he was coming. Marcus went inside Ma Scritchets house looking to find a cure for his problem. Instead Ma Scritchet gave Marcus a lipstick, at which he was outraged but Ma Scritchet simply said’ it will work, it will work better than you think’. In It Used To Be Greene Once they didn’t really solve their problem it just happened. It happened one day that when the children came home, their father was in his best clothes. When they asked their mum what had happened she said ‘your dads just won ten thousand pounds in a lottery’. At this the children were very happy and were ecstatic when their car was promptly taken to the dump and replaced.
Marcus (Lucky Lips) wanted to be popular, and he thought that if he kissed someone popular that he would automatically become the best. That was when he came up with his plan to kiss Fey Billings. Fey was the most popular girl in school and one day Marcus went into school, sat next to Fey and put
