We see a perfect example of this in the first scene, when Romeo is torn up about his current love, Rosaline. While hooked on her, Romeo says that he is “out of her favor when I am in love” (1.1 172) In this line, Romeo admits to be in love with Rosaline, however she does not love him back. Further on in this scene, we see how distraught Romeo is, and how distraught he becomes over this situation. He refers to love as a “Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health, Still-waking sleep. (1.1185-186) As clearly proven in this quote, Romeo is super upset. He compares fathers, to lead, calls smoke bright, and calls health sick. To Romeo, this is what love is. A big puzzle of opposite things that just don’t make sense. He as confused as to why someone he loves so much doesn’t love him back. If Rosaline is all he has ever wanted, why can he not have her? However, when Romeo is finally convinced to attend the ball only hours later, he then falls out of love with Rosaline, and into love with juliet. Just like that. Not even an hour after meeting Juliet, he sees Juliet in her bedroom and declares “Its is my lady. O, it is my love!” (2.2 10) Here, Romeo is now claiming that he is in love with Juliet. After just a few kisses and conversations, he had forgotten Rosaline and moved onto Juliet. This is a prime example of why they are not really in love, they are in lust. Romeo is confused and persuasive, which are not good characteristics when it comes to love. They are caught in the moment, like most teens would be, and have not had the time to really fall in love
