I chose to apply to WVU SOM because of the university’s large social role and association with the state. I believe that I can contribute to WVU SOM’s communal ties to help foster change and improve healthcare on both a community scale and a state scale. I believe WVU will offer the opportunities to serve rural areas that lack access to health care, an issue I hope to also improve in my local community. I am interested in learning about the university’s and state’s plan to address underserved populations. Moreover, I believe WVU SOM’s program will provide me the tools to teach patients about their health. I believe transferring knowledge to the community will be the first step in encouraging and changing to healthy lifestyles.…
The final section of my Philadelphia University portfolio represents the specialized skills and knowledge that I have gained during my time here as a student. When I began my journey at Philadelphia University in Health Service management I was unaware of the major problems that impacted the healthcare field and my goals first were to apply for the states Administrator-In-Training program after graduation. Thereafter I wanted to complete the Administrator-In-Training program hours at my current job Elkins Crest Nursing Home. In the final analysis, I hoped to become an Administrator or an Assistant Administrator for Extendicare Health Services within the next two years. Working at Pennsylvania Hospital has altered my views slightly. I would like to stay within the Pennsylvania Hospital network and be an administrator.…
First of all, Anna, the message that Herbert Hoover was trying to convey was defined in my initial post if you read it and comprehended it correctly. Second, it is whatever not hwtaever. Hoover being a new president, he obviously would have had terrible circumstances thrown at him, the same as Donald Trump is right now. Hoover first responded to the Depression by attempting to restore public confidence in the…

The health care industry is one of the world's largest and fastest-growing industries. I am eager to return back to it, for it is one that I love.” Employment of medical and health services managers is expected to grow by 22 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations.” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2012) At a minimum I seek to obtain a career in health care administration on a management…
My goals for residency are simple – to continuously learn in order to educate and heal. Although I have been involved in the community in various ways for many years, I am truly excited to start giving back to society from a different perspective – that of a physician, of a person’s first stop in their most vulnerable of times. Family Medicine is a broad field that will challenge me in many ways, but I am ready to enhance my knowledge in a program that fosters learning through a supportive, team approach where patients and their futures are the greatest concerns.…
In my life, I have been a patient too many times to say I am well familiar with different roles in health care. When I was fourteen I was diagnosed with a type of cancer called Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and after six months of treatment I decided I wanted to help others like the many clinicians that helped me. After I graduated high school I got a job at an outpatient physical therapy clinic and there my true passion began. This inspired me to apply and eventually get accepted into the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Gateway Community College. The Physical Therapist Assistant program at Gateway will help me reach my goal of becoming a Physical Therapist Assistant by developing my character professionally, giving me the knowledge to help patients, and pass my board to receive my license as a Physical Therapist Assistant.…
Major strengths in the MPH program are the curriculum and the faculty expertise. The curriculum includes a comprehensive evaluation of the five major competencies of public health, but further expands to address cultural competencies, community health, health behavior, research methods, etc. to ensure that students receive a well-rounded preparation. Both primary and secondary program faculty have significant experience in the field, which in turn enables students to gain first-hand experience of the professional practice. The culminating experience has been modified throughout the years to provide students a more comprehensive means of demonstrating their public health skills. As such, now it includes not only a graduate research methods paper…
Since last year I donned a cap and gown of my alma mater's colors and said goodbye to my undergraduate career. Although graduating was a joyous and momentous occasion, the first few words on the letter from the admissions office quickly humbled me. However, this setback reaffirmed my passion for people and my fascination with the human body, and I knew I had to fight harder. It was quite unusual but in my moment of discouragement I found solace in a silly movie quote. Rocky Balboa screamed at me, “It ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." My dream is to help encourage patients who have been knocked down by life and bring them transformation through movement. What better way to embody that spirit than to get up and fight after experiencing a set back myself. In hindsight, I am thankful for how events unfolded.…
This December I will complete my minor in Public Health which has provided me with knowledge of healthcare needs in the community, and ideas on how to innovate and improve healthcare systems. My public health training and faith in christianity have given me confidence in my ability to make moral and ethical decisions in life, research, and professional settings. In addition, I currently work in the College of Public Health, which has taught me professionalism, responsibility, and communication in a fast paced work environment.…

Much has happened since I graduated from the School of Public Health in 1986. I achieved my dream of working in a hospital setting when I secured my first job as a Management Accountant at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. There I especially enjoyed developing relationships with managers from many departments as I assisted them with financial reports and budget information. Although I aspired to have enough experience one day to be eligible for an administrative role in a clinical area, my job provided a great opportunity to learn about the inner workings of the…
