I chose to apply to WVU SOM because of the university’s large social role and association with the state. I believe that I can contribute to WVU SOM’s communal ties to help foster change and improve healthcare on both a community scale and a state scale. I believe WVU will offer the opportunities to serve rural areas that lack access to health care, an issue I hope to also improve in my local community. I am interested in learning about the university’s and state’s plan to address underserved populations. Moreover, I believe WVU SOM’s program will provide me the tools to teach patients about their health. I believe transferring knowledge to the community will be the first step in encouraging and changing to healthy lifestyles.

With each project, my colleague did not acknowledge my contributions. I continued to offer my assistance to help alleviate my colleagues’ work load. Moreover, I upheld professionalism and respected my colleagues. A few months later, my supervisor approached me and recognized my hard work and growth. This situation taught me to allow for my work to speak for itself and recognition is made even if it is unspoken. The lesson I learned will affect my career as a physician because my role as a physician is to provide the best care for my patients, regardless of my age or position.
