Macbeth
How are the characters Malcolm, Macbeth and Duncan essential in the play Macbeth? Choose 2 and explain. Yes, all 3 of these characters are integral to the plot, but in different ways. However, I feel Duncan and Malcolm are the more important characters. Duncan’s role was the good king who was the first victim of Macbeth’s murderous ambition. His significance in the play was to be the foil that juxtaposed Macbeth’s portrayal of a king. Malcolm was the son of Duncan and heir to the throne. As such, his restoration was to symbolise Scotland’s return to order. Duncan was a good king who was trusting and benevolent. This is seen in Act1 Scene4, Duncan saying "He was a gentlemen on whom I built an absolute trust". The fact that he “built an absolute trust” on the Thane of Cawdor who eventually betrayed him shows that he is trusting. Duncan was also virtuous. This is seen in Act1 Scene7, with Macbeth saying “Hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been so clear in his great office, that his virtues will plead like angels, trumpet-tongued, against the deep damnation of his taking-off” This shows Macbeth even recognised Duncan’s many merits and hesitates to kill him. Due to Macbeth’s murderous ambition and the instigation of Lady Macbeth, he was tricked and murdered. As a king, Macbeth was the complete opposite, he did evil things like killing his friend Banquo and killing Macduff’s family because he wanted to remain as king, which was him being more of a tyrant. Duncan was very necessary to show what a king should be, benevolent and just. He was the foil to what a king should not be, which was Macbeth being evil and unjust. As the rightful heir, Malcolm was wise. This is seen in Act2 Scene3, “This murderous shaft that's shot hath not yet lighted, and our safest way is to avoid the aim. Therefore, to horse; and let us not be dainty of leave-taking, but shift away”. Malcolm’s wisdom led to him winning the war against Macbeth. Malcolm is also has a strong will. This is seen in Act4 Scene3, “Let’s make us medicines of our great revenge, to cure this deadly grief”. The fact that Malcolm decided to “make us medicines of our great revenge” shows his determination to end Macbeth’s reign. As king, Malcolm’s restoration was to symbolise Scotland’s return to order. The two points of Macbeth being wise and his determination to win portrayed Malcolm as what a good king should actually be. Malcolm being king not only replaced Duncan as the leader of Scotland, he was also a better king in other aspects such as being a more cautious person by testing where Macduff’s loyalties were before placing his trust in him. To conclude, these two characters are very vital towards the plot of Macbeth as it portrays Macbeth’s weaknesses and wrongdoings during his reign while showing Malcolm as a better king who can solve problems and bring Scotland forward.

Duncan makes the mistake of trusting the thane of Cawdor at the beginning of the play. This is an example of Duncan’s fatal flaw that he is too trusting of others. “He was a man on whom I built an absolute trust”. Duncan was deceived in this instance but this had no-where near the affect the deception of Macbeth had on him. After Duncan ordered the execution of the Thane of Cawdor and gives the title to Macbeth “What he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won”. Duncan is eventually brought to Macbeths castle in Inverness and murdered by Macbeth even after Duncan claimed, “This castle hath a pleasant seat”. This is an example of…

Shakespearean heroes are dense characters and these two are pretty straightforward. With Shakespeare there's always more to a hero than meets the eye. In Act I, ii we see that King Duncan considers Macbeth a brave soldier and good man “O valiant cousin, worthy gentleman!” (King Duncan, I, ii, 24). This can be considered a weakness or, perhaps, strength in the relationship, it depends on the point of view. It is a weakness if we analyze Macbeth’s side. He is “…too full o’ the milk of human kindness…that wouldst thou holily; wouldst not play false…”…

Murder is a recurring theme in the tragedy of Macbeth. Although there are countless murders, the play DOES distinguish between honorable and dishonorable violence. For example, Macbeth begins to form an internal conflict prior to murdering Duncan. The conflict can be seen throughout lines 34-64 of Scene 2 in Act two, specifically with the lines, “I see thee yet, in form as palpable as this which now I draw.” This murder is definitely seen as a dishonorable death, as Macbeth murders Duncan due to the fact that he wishes the prophecy to come true. Another example of dishonorable death would be in scene three of act three, when murderers are hired to kill Banquo. This death is seen as dishonorable as it was only committed to fulfill the prophecy. Not only was it dishonorable for that specific reason; it was seen as dishonorable as Banquo’s ghost came back to haunt Macbeth while having dinner with the lords. Macbeth constantly sees the ghost throughout dinner, specifically when the ghost sits in Macbeth’s chair. This shows how dishonorable it was to murder Banquo, as it was only to fulfill the prophecy. However, the play does distinguish between dishonorable and honorable deaths. Macbeth’s death in the end was honorable, as he deserved to die. Macbeth was responsible for the madness throughout the entire story, killing countless men as he was afraid of the revelations that had came true from the prophecy. Macduff’s killing of Macbeth was done due to the fact that Macduff was avenging his family; however, Macbeth’s killings were done out of terror. Without a doubt, the tragedy of Macbeth distinguishes between honorable and dishonorable deaths. This play also can be seen as a plea for peace and human harmony, by supporting the fact that people will murder not only out of greed, but out of honor as well.…

Firstly there is Duncan, who became king by divine right and is full of the king becoming graces which were cited by his son, Malcolm in Act 4 ‘as justice, verity, temperance, stableness, bounty, perseverance, mercy, lowliness’. Duncan rules with celestial force and approval. While all his subjects may not love him and relinquish to his rule there is no disputing his goodness. Even in the beginning of the play we can see some over trusting issues surrounding Duncan as Cawdor and Macdonald deceive him. This could be seen as weak but it only adds to the nobility of the fair, just king. In a very biblical method he punishes the wicked and rewards the good. He awards Macbeth the title of Thane of Cawdor and reassures Banquo of upcoming greatness when he says ‘I have begun to plant you’. Not even the self-made king can dispel Duncan’s decency “The Lord's anointed temple.”…
