Macbeth was set in 17th century Scotland and was written by William Shakespeare. It was written as a viewing of the royal monarchy. The leaders at the time were king James the first and queen Elizabeth.
Act 1 Scene 1
The introduction of the play shows three witches talking among themselves. They talk about a character called Macbeth. This is the first time the character of Macbeth is introduced to us. This is important due to the fact that this is a tragedy, and Macbeth, in this play, is the tragic hero. One of the key features of a tragic hero is the fact that they are introduced to us by other characters before we actually meet them, usally under good circumstances.

She tells him he should be courageous and strong if he wants to be able to become king. She tells him he has to wear a false face and "look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under 't" which just means to look happy and innocent, but like a snake be ready to bite at the right time and to be vemonous.
Act 1 Scene 6
Duncan and his noblemen arrive at Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's castle and are greeted by a very welcoming Lady Macbeth. Duncan goes on to talk about how comfortable and homely the castles atmosphere is. This is very ironic because the audience know that this is the last thing he will probably see and he wont be leaving that castle.
He asks of Macbeth's whereabouts, but that is unknown, even by his wife. So she goes to look for him.
Act 1 Scene 7
Macbeth is sitting alone in his chamber thinking about the decision he is about to make and weighing out his options. He decides that he doesn't actually want to kill Duncan because "first, as a kinsmen and his subject" he has no right to kill someone who talks so highly of him and who he should look up to "then, as his host, who should against his murder shut the door, not bear the knife myself." Meaning 'Duncan is staying in my castle, i should shut the door against his murder, not hold the murdering knife in my
