After Macbeth commits the deed of murdering the King, he proceeds to say “How is’t with me, when every noise appals me? / What hands are here! Ha, they pluck out mine eyes. / Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood / Clean from my hand? No, this my hand will rather / The multitudinous seas incarnadine, / Making the green one red.”(2.2.61-63). This quote reveals that Macbeth is clearly paranoid that he will not be cleared of the guilt of the crime he has just committed, and that he had a strong conscience. At this point, we saw Lady Macbeth, who came to comfort him and she stated “A little water clears of this deed.”(2.2.68). Her statement here provides us with the knowledge that she holds no conscience and she is very relaxed about killing others because she is not afraid of being deemed guilty. She presents no remorse or fear over the act that Macbeth committed. However, after the majority of the murders have taken place, her guilt and remorse return to haunt Lady Macbeth when she says “Out, damned spot!”(5.1.25). This is a clear presentation of the conscience that Macbeth once held, taking control over Lady Macbeth because she hallucinates by seeing Duncan’s bloodstains on her hands and clothes, when there is nothing there. Due to the severe changes within the Macbeths’ marriage, they ended up distancing themselves from one another because they became less dependent on one another and they spent more time on their own rather than together.
