Now before we begin I’d like to define the word “architect” for you; a person responsible for inventing or realising a project or idea. And this afternoon I’m going to show you just that; how Macbeth invented and realised his downfall.
Macbeth’s has two main vices that cause his downfall; greed and weakness. These can be seen from the start of the play, from the moment he first meets the witches and hears their prophesies of his royal future, he is rapt and we can see his greed clearly. He is avid to know more and this is where we see his dark thoughts first come to light. Where he first starts to invent. The witches merely awaken his mind to the fact that what he has been thinking about is indeed possible. If the opp believe this takes the blame of regicide off Macbeth’s shoulders, they are severely mistaken. There was no witchcraft, no spells cast and they forced nothing upon him, and so Macbeth is the only guilty party. Macbeth committed the murder alone by himself. The witches are unable to corrupt the virtuous, Banquo, They only work on evil already present in one’s mind.
Being pronounced Thane of Cawdor only makes his yearning for power stronger. He has thoughts of killing Duncan but suppresses them and realises his idea anyway. He wants to achieve his goal by any means possible.
When he does become King, he is tyrant. He kills his best friend Banquo. He kills Macduff’s family all so that he can remain King. He commits these crimes completely on his own.
He even goes as far to return to the witches; though the opp would have you believe that they lulled him into a false sense of security, we believe that he was blinded by his own pride and ambition.
His weakness can be seen in the scenes with Lady Macbeth. He is responsible for putting power into her hands and letting her influence
