Maclemore Consumerism
Consumerism is a contemporary social issue that has began to transcend into something very alarming. Its very essence is the promotion of goods to the public in order to benefit the economy of a particular society, however not everybody sees it that way. In music, many artists have declared their opposition or support of the issue. An example of opposition to consumerism is Billy Joel’s 1977 single from the album The Stranger, “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)”. The song discusses the singer’s antipathy for the middle-class workers around him who are willing to work to death in order to possess material items of greater value. Billy Joel emphasizes his distaste for this lifestyle through accentuation of the chorus. Another example of anti-consumerism is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s 2010 single “Wings” from their first album, The Heist. Macklemore describes his life …show more content…
This song’s tempo gradually increases as the picture that Macklemore is painting with his words becomes more evident through his sincerity and passion. Consumerism is engulfing modern day society and intoxicating the morality of the world. The emphasis on material items is a serious issue and has begun to cripple our nation. Consumerism is the theory that an increasing consumption of goods is economically desirable. The idea of consumerism has started to move away from benefiting our economy to benefiting the self interest of each consumer. For too long, we've been manipulated to consume as much as we possibly can, to buy every new product launched, the top brands, and pretty much anything we could get our hands on (Tanaka). Music is much like the ocean. The ocean waves transport products across continents; and, for many, it is a source of relaxation and comfort. Music spreads ideas across populations and is an outlet for strong emotions. Although the ocean and music have positive effects on society, both the ocean with its tsunamis and hurricanes and music with controversial, dark messages can be destructive to small towns and young people. Music influences us in our daily lives. Our actions, thoughts, and emotions can all be affected by the music we listen to, therefore one should be mindful of their exposure to potentially corrupting music. In their song “The Middle,” Jimmy Eat World encourages positive thinking about a person’s self image and actions,…

According to Jeff Chang, “By the beginning of 2005, hip-hop music, in particular, had become a weapon of mass distraction— abused by corporate media monopolies with their deployments of blockbuster-minded execs, reactionary programmers, and vernacular shock jocks, incurring a grassroots clapback from hip-hop activists dismayed at the pimping of their culture” (Chang, xi). In other words, the author points out that the new age of hip hop has lost the true meaning of the genre and is too focused on making a big hit that will take the world by storm. The society that people are living in today are among a commercial era of hip hop, so it is appropriate to compare the sounds and visuals of what millennials have been raving over since 2005, to the original sound that started a movement that has evolved over…

He does not just give his opinion and hope the reader will accept and agree with it. For instance, he takes facts from anthropologists and historians, quotes Karl Marx from The Communist Manifesto, and comments on Max Weber’s The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. What makes his argument so alluring is the fact that he does not shoot down consumerism completely but views it as misunderstood and a compliment to the problem, not the cause. He does not make the reader feel selfish about feeling the need to buy things to validate where we stand in society but says that “commercialism has lessened pain”, meaning we have more pleasure in our lives compared to discomfort in our lives than most people throughout history. He goes on to discuss another work of literature, Pursuing Happiness, by Stanley Lebergott. In regard to this, he agrees that Americans buy their way to happiness. Also within this book, he remarks on the statistics of American consumption on a wide range of products which the reader can identify with considering everyone has bought something at some point in their lives. Perhaps the most defining argument within his essay is the fact that he believes our consumer culture is so powerful because it frees us from the strictures of social class. Because it is so possible for many Americans to acquire goods, it is hence possible for everyone to be a part of the “in…

In the Essay, “In Defense of consumerism,” by Llewellyn Rockwell, Rockwell makes some very valid points using logos, pathos, and ethos to appeal to his audience. He uses those three appeals to present his views and defend consumerism. Throughout his essay he defends consumerism in a way that shows specifically how it has been unfairly portrayed as an evil that is destroying our society today. In today's society consumerism is often portrayed to be a negative aspect of people's lives and purchasing behaviors which inevitably leads to materialism. Many of these viewpoints can be analyzed as being subjective in that they focus primarily on "superfluous" products and "debts" created, but yet fail to acknowledge the positive aspects like Rockwell does.…

Consumerism as we understand as individuals is the need to acquire objects and possessions often beyond our essential needs, just for the sake of acquiring them. This universal theme is made patent through two of Dawes poems, Americanized and Televistas 1977. Dawe is successful as he discusses and ultimately utilizes the theme of consumerism in a negative, derogatory way. Additionally, Dawes employment of techniques such as metaphors, rhetorical questions, repetition, figurative language and tone further enables the responder to understand themes which arise throughout both poems such as consumerism, capitalism, cultural imperialism and materialism. It is through this utilization that obsessive consumption of material goods can lead people to believe that their lives as well as their social status is determined by what they own and ultimately, consume.…

After the examination of the many facets of capitalism and consumerism, it became apparent that the modernistic capitalistic system is just another form of social control. Consumers, unintentionally are conditioned to reproduce their social standings. By purchasing a product's symbolic value, they signal their wealth and class. Advertisers and marketeers combine the subconscious meaning behind products with tactics to trap consumers into the buy, use, discard cycle of planned obsolescence. These tactics distract the public with constantly changing styles and models that break down, or they tire of, just in time for the next fleeting trend. Consequently, this system creates a wasteful, disposable culture. Since products are only designed…

The society that we live in has taught everyone how to constantly consume, to an extent where no one even realizes how connected he or she is aiding consumerism. It has reached a point where consumerism is consuming consumers. Ill be the very first person to admit I am just as absorbed as the next, but for each person it’s a different set of products or brands that makes them feel like they connect. But one sport more than any of the other sports had this effect on me, the type of effect that would dictate my moods and decisions through the rest of the day. That…

Starting in the early 1990s, rap and hip hop music has witnessed a shift in the ideal of cultural production to that of consumption. These genres of music effectively endorse a certain lifestyle in which consumption is highly promulgated through the media, including that of “designer clothes, jewelry, cars, and liquor” (Hunter, 2011). These ostentatious displays of wealth are associated with the concept of “ghetto fabulous”, which is illustrated through rags to riches, Horatio Alger-like storylines (Mukherjee, 2006). Music videos within these genres consistently display images of conspicuous consumption, acting as commercials for a plethora of products, ranging from Nike shoes to different brands of liquor to luxury car brands such as Lamborghinis. Rappers are featured in videos in which paid product placement offers them lucrative deals (e.g. rapper Nelly and his deal with Nike for “Air Force One” shoes).…

Materialism and consumption maybe it is the new globally social epidemic. Where’s it going, is there a cure for this disease? Everyone is guilty of materialism to some extent whether he or she chose to accept this concept or deny it whole-heartedly. Is it the individuals fault or can this way of life blame someone or something? Fortunately, always wanting more is not a crime, or else everyone would be a criminal for society’s actions. It is a good thing that exercising rights of freedom is not limited to indulging, but freedom also allows the right to conserve. Just who are the Joneses anyway; they sure have a bunch of people in competition! Excessively often individuals feel they must compete with neighbors, co-workers, peers, or even family. This materialistic way of life is tough; trying to fit in is a tiring task. Magazines, books, internet, and television have been sources of advertising for quite some time, however, can these media sources take the blame for individual decision making; probably not.…
