I consider the fact that I am going to school at Lake Land College to be one of the most important opportunities that I will ever have. I am a first-generation student. Neither of my parents, nor their parents before them have attended a college. I believe that I would have followed in that same path too if I had not been severely injured at the age of 13. I was in an ATV accident and broke my leg so badly that I missed most of my 8th grade year. I not only learned how important my family was to me, but after struggling through 8th grade, I learned how important my eduction had become to me too. I decided to major in Social Work-Health. This health education class was required. I am not sorry that I took it; I think I have learned more here than in any other class I have taken so far. As I went through each module, I knew that I was learning things that I could either use in my personal life or in my future employment as a social worker.

John F. Kennedy once said, “Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.” In my initial M06-D01 discussion post, I remarked that we have to take the time to become more physically active. Before this lesson, I thought of exercise as drudgery but when I think of it now and in this new way, it makes all the difference. Exercise is just a part of being physically active. The good news is that I can do anything, as long as I get up and do something. Physical activity is a treatment plan. It fights a myriad of health issues, such as, arthritis, diabetes, Alzheimers/dementia, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, cancer, hip fractures, anxiety, stress, depression and fatigue, to name a few.
