Madam Red Monologue
Black blurs to grey and then to the yellow of the streetlights. Pixels and glitches surround you and the distorted screech of Grell’s scythe pierces your ears. for a moment, before details surround you. You hear Grell’s scythe, and this time, rather than aiming for Madam Red, her bright green eyes fixate on you. Whirling her scythe one good time, she’s in a perfect alignment with your chest, but you feel an ice cold grasp push you to the ground. You miss hitting the brick wall by an inch.

“Aww, Bassy~!” Grell whines. “Protecting her now? Tsk, tsk. That simply won’t do.”

Her attention momentarily shifts to her original target and with a single fling of the wrist, crimson stains crimson. Ciel watches as Madam Red falls right before his feet.

Your head turns with the impact and you lift your hand to your cheek. You turn your head to see Ciel standing in front of you, chest heaving. You suppose he needs someone to take this emotions out on, but why you? You hadn’t done anything.

“You could’ve helped,” Ciel mutters. “You could’ve been some use to us.”

That’s what the slap’s about? That you could’ve jumped in front of a moving chainsaw? You had, and you died, of course. Does he expect you to give your life for someone you don’t even like? Hell no.

“I seen what happens”— more like experienced it —”And I die!”

Up from the roof, Grell hears you and turns to examine you. Sebastian takes advantage as he would with any other lady, and strikes Grell. With his well-balanced legs, he manages to kick the scythe out of Grell’s hands. It continues making its cry of desperation to slice something as it tumbles down.

The scythe lands about five feet away from you and Ciel.

Grell grunts as she hops down. Before she reaches her scythe, Sebastian’s hand is already on it. He smiles as he lifts it up, and brushes off a few specks of his own blood.

“It seems impossible to kill a grim reaper with my bare hands,” Sebastian observes. “But what about this? A grim reaper’s sickle can slice through

You can’t stop people from dying, and you definitely can’t stop a grim reaper from walking away. Even with the knowledge you have of this world, you can’t let too much slip, otherwise you’ll be killed and the world will reset back to before you said those words. One death is enough.

“I did help,” you say. “You didn’t listen. I told you ‘Jack the Ripper’ would be at the party and he was! I told you we wouldn’t make it time, and I was correct! I only know what’s bound to happen. I can’t change it.”

Ciel blinks, before casting his gaze elsewhere. “We’ll keep in contact. You help me when I need it, and I’ll keep you alive.”

Now your eyes are like saucers. Is he really trying to make that sort of deal with you? Yes, you have plans of becoming a pawn of his, but not like this. You need someone to take you in, not left in the streets where you’ll only be convicted of more crimes.

“I . . . I don’t want to be a pawn of yours,” you say. “I know how you are, Ciel, and I know you’ll only betray in the end, like everyone else will. Like I said, I’ve fallen victim and still do, but I know not to do so with you.”

Sebastian smirks.

The bitter night Avah was killed the whole town was out celebrating. The Spring Festival was an annual affair and only the most isolated of persons would have not been there. It was a festival meticulously planned out by those intrigued in such matters and each detail was carried out to exact perfection. The Humphrey family would perform a skit each year at exactly six-thirty, the mayor would grace the audience with a well-planned speech at six-forty-five. At seven o’clock the potluck dessert would be brought out by the women and then once a half hour had passed, enough time for the people to converse with each other, the festival games would begin.…

I distinctly remember having lost all feeling in my tongue and walls closing in around me. I remember sitting on my bed, feet dangling over the edge. Visions of my brothers, my nephew, and my unborn son flashed in my mind like lights warning me to not come any closer; for if I did, I would meet a similar fate. The light from the television flickered on our faces; mine blank, two shameful, and the last with rage. There is not a single noun, verb, or complex sentence in any language to describe how I felt that night.…

In the second grade, I had a crippling fear of my teacher, who loved to play, “Let's pick on all the students who aren’t raising their hands.” In my imagination, school was where carnivorous teachers scanned the classroom, looking to slaughter the most helpless creatures. And it seemed like this one had clear intentions of mounting my prized head on the wall. This meant that I suffered from a chronic case of rapid heartbeat, timid eye contact, and tense palms that left imprints of red crescent moons on my thighs.…
