You sparked my interest in how Veterans Affair hospitals would compare. I decided to research if there are any research studies pertaining this information. Sales, Sharp, Li, Greiner, Lowy, and Mitchell (2005) found that registered nurses working with the Veteran Health Administration when compared to other registered nurses in other countries especially those in Pennsylvania have an overall greater positive outlook on their practice environment and therefore report more job satisfication. They stated that Veteran Health Administrations were comparable to magnet hospitals. According to McHugh,Kelly, Smith, Wu, Vanak, and Aiken (2013) magnet hospitals have significantly better work environments, lower odds of mortality, and lower odds of failure-to-rescue as well as success in attracting and retaining nurses. If Veteran Affair hospitals are comparable to magnet hospitals, I would make the assumption that they have great nurse job satisfication and positive patient outcomes. However, due to the lack of research available specifically on this population, I would definitely say there is a need for more research in this area.
