Analyse your role and use of initial and diagnostic assessment in agreeing individual learning goals with learners.
The proactive use of initial and diagnostic assessment is the most valuable process that can decide on the success of whole years teaching and the student learning journey. What can be more important than getting the students on to the right courses at a level that gives them an opportunity to develop and succeed? The Initial assessment helps to identify a student’s learning level, and diagnostic assessment leads to a personal profile to enable to start an Individual learning plan based on the curriculum and the diagnostic results.
There are opportunities where information can be gathered and these are:
Interview: some of the questions one would be asking at an interview stage to gather information could be:
1) Why are they choosing this course? What are their aspirations? What do they think the course entails?
2) What skills have they already acquired? What qualifications did/will they achieve at school?
3) Their application form details
4) Establish any support needs; both learner and learning.
Taster Day: For example in professional cookery the students are invited to a taster day to give them an opportunity to experience the kitchen environment and this is an opportunity for them to demonstrate some of their practical skills. They fill in self-assessment forms after the exercise.
Registration Day: On registration day the students will have diagnostic assessment tests for literacy, language, numeracy and ICT; as well as a learning preference test (VARK).
Taking in to consideration all the above information one now has an opportunity to begin negotiating learning goals. These will be documented on Initial assessment sheets and regularly updated in tutorial sessions along with progress and achievements. The agreed learning
