“And ever has it been known that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation” (Gibran). Relationships are difficult to maintain when someone or something is keeping you apart. “Love is missing someone whenever you’re apart, but somehow feeling warm inside because your close in heart” (Knudsen). Many relationships are bent or destroyed because another person, not involved on the relationship, does not want the relationship to persist. This is a physical separation caused by a person(s) . Examples of this are in several pieces of literature. In Romeo and Juliet, both families do not want the relationship to continue, due to an earlier feud between the two families. Because the relationship is not able to continue, Romeo and Juliet are forced to be separated (Shakespeare). Another example of physical separation is in The Odyssey. While Odysseus is gone away at sea, for approximately twenty years, a large group of suitors try to woo Penelope. The suitors believe Odysseus is dead and therefore, the suitors believe Penelope must marry one of them. But, upon a test to see if any suitors are worthy of Penelope’s hand in marriage , Odysseus returns (Homer). There are also means of emotional and physical separation caused by an object or state of being. One example is death of a loved one. When a loved person dies, communication between one and the dead are cut off. Thus, making it difficult for a relationship to last, or even take place. Attraction to another is also another common example. It is very difficult to love one when that person loves another. In The Odyssey, it was common for males to have many relationships with other females, than his wife. Many relationships are ruined because of mental and emotional things. Such things include lying, secrets, hatred/ fake love, and disagreements.
Baltasar Gracian said, “A single lie destroys a whole reputation of integrity”. Lying and secrets ruin a relationship.
