Introduction
Musical pieces contain specific elements regardless of genre and style. The two most important elements in any musical piece are Variety and Unity, and they apply to every musical composition. Unity in music is basically the togetherness expressed in the theme of the music, while variety as an element suggests different components and factors (Paynter, 12). They may seem to be contradictory in nature, but both co-exist in any musical piece.
1. How unity is created in this piece:
Unity in this piece of music is illustrated through the steady and fixed beat that can be heard playing at a similar dynamic all through the song. The whole piece of music has three main sections, that is from the beginning to 1:19, secondly from 1:20 to 2:19 and lastly from 2:20 to the end. Unity and the admixture of timbre in the piece have been created through the first and last part of the song being played by a brass instrument, while the second part being dominated by the …show more content…
The first musical idea can be heard from the beginning of the song to about 1:19. In this duration of 1 minute and 19 seconds idea A is played, which is signified by the presence of Timbre. Rhythm is repeated by a number of percussion instruments and the melody created by the keyboard instruments, woodwind, and brass. At 1:20, idea B begins with an improvised solo that is played by a saxophone. Idea B is signified by the presence of pitch. In the duration that the saxophone plays, the melody changes making the notes seem sporadic and shorter. The saxophone plays to 2:19 after which it is followed a smooth transition of a piano solo carrying the same musical idea B. the piano solo goes on until 3:18, after which it is joined by other instruments, and for the rest of the remaining song, idea A is clearly heard (Bonfa, et al..,
