James Swearingen was born September 26, 1947 in Ohio. He has been a performer, composer, arranger and educator. He went to Bowling Green State University and Ohio University and studied hard to be where he is at today. They range from two minutes to at least six minutes in length of playing them. With at least 86 commissioned works, many of his pieces, have been in contests and festivals throughout those years. Being great composer he has received several awards. He received several ASCAP awards,selected as an Accomplished Graduate of the Fine and Performing Arts from Bowling Green State University, received the 2002 Community Music Educator award, and many other awards. James Swearingen composed and tributed this piece of work to Mark S. Kelly. He tributed this piece to him because Mark S. Kelly helped Swearingen along the road of his career. “Several times during my eighteen years of public school teaching, Professor Kelly provided me with educational guidance which helped to mold my career as a teacher. Needless to say, I owe many of my successes to this man's valuable advice. Invicta is an overture composed in 1981. It appeals to performers and audience by beginning with a energetic maestoso. At measure 9 a low brass figure leads into the first statement of the flowing, lyrical theme 1 in the clarinet and baritone voices. A measure 30 the rest of the woodwinds join in the melody. Around measure 53, Swearingen somewhat layers more and more voices of the band into this piece. At the end of this piece they finish with a strong coda section in ABA style composition.
Pierre La Plante was born September 25, 1943 in Wisconsin. Through his grade school years he was active with high school band, choir, and theater. La Plante received a music clinic scholarship to University of Wisconsin in Madison. He soon received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Music. In 1967 he began his teaching career. He has worked many years with beginning band students and has proven very helpful when writing music that is accesible
