Manufactured vs Natural Acid Rain Effect on Tomato Seed Germination

Introduction The purpose of my experiment is to see the effects of different types of acid rain on tomato see germination. Specifically, I am testing man-made acid rain versus natural rain water to see if one inhibits the seed germination more than the other.

Materials
1. 27 Tomato Seeds
2. Miracle-Gro Soil
3. Trays
4. Spray Bottle
5. Tap Water
6. Man-made acid rain (ph 5.5)
7. Acidic Rain Water
8. Grow Lights
9. Beaker
10. Tape
11. Marker
Methods
1. Place a tray with 9 cubes for seed germination on a table
2. Use a beaker to measure 150ml of Miracle Gro soil
3. Place 150ml of soil into each space of the tray
4. Place 3 tomato seeds in each of the spaces
5. Label each row of spaces with the type of water that will be used to water the seeds
6. Use the bottle of tap water to spray one row of seeds 3 times
7. Repeat step 6 with man-made acid rain and the natural acid rain water
8. Place the tray of seeds under Grow Lights

Please notice the attached page for the data of each seed. In the Petri dish labeled “hollycock”, Experiment Group A. the group tested a total number of twenty (20) radish seeds (Raphanus sativus), out of the twenty (20) seeds, there was only a twenty-five (25) percent of germination, and only five (5) seeds had actually germinated. The length of each seed varied in lengths from the shortest, three (3) millimeters to the longest fourteen (14) millimeters. Each length of all twenty (20) seedlings were added up and divided by twenty (20) and the group averaged 2.7 millimeters in length of the germinated seedlings. In the second Petri dish labeled “control”, Experiment Group B, out of the twenty (20) radish seeds tested with just distilled water, a percentage of eighty-five (85) percent of successful germination, and the actual number was seventeen (17) actually germinated. The length of these seeds varied in sized from the shortest of seven (7) millimeters to the longest of ninety-two (92) millimeters. Each length of all germinated seeds from the controlled group were added up and then divided by twenty (20) and the average length of the germinated seedlings is 19.35…

Acid rain is usually a result of human air pollution such as emissions of sulfur and nitrogen compounds. These compounds react with those in the atmosphere causing acids to be produced and in turn causing precipitation to be acidic in nature. The negative impact of acid rain is evident in ecosystems. Acid rain changes the PH levels of rivers and lakes. Animals such as fish are very susceptible to changes in PH and therefore are unable to survive if the change is too drastic. Plankton and invertebrates are put even more at risk. Acid rain in water environments can also affect plant life. On land, acid rain damages forests in high altitudes and also lowers the fertility of soil as important nutrients and minerals are removed from it. These impacts on different aspects of the environment have a trickling down effect that negatively influence entire…
