Marching Band Research Paper

In seventh grade I used to be in marching band. I had done band in sixth grade as well, but this year it was marching band. I played the clarinet and I was pretty good at it. In the middle of the school year we had a parade that our band had to march in. It was something that I had never done before, so I was a little bit apprehensive about doing it. People who who were new to marching band like me were referred to as “newbies”, which wasn’t very many people. During marching band practices all of the “newbies” were put in the back because we didn’t really know what we were doing. Over time all the newbies got better, but that didn’t seem to apply to me. I could keep tempo and play my instrument while marching in sync with everyone and I would
always get pointed out by the conductor and he would always say “Amon your off”. No one said it, but I was the “weak link”, that one person straggling behind and I just couldn’t keep up with everyone. At one point I even though whether this was worth it or not because no one likes to suck at anything. I say all of this to say that this was a point in my life where I had failed. So rather than sit here and try to impress you with stories of excellence and perfection in my life, I’d rather show you a moment where I have simply failed. There is no such thing as a perfect student and it would be disingenuous for me to sit here and try and portray that to you. I have failed many times in my life and I will continue to, which is one of the reasons I look forward to going to Webster University. In the Netherlands I would have the opportunity to learn on my own and be more independent. On top of that this is my one chance to go see the world and learn about a variety of cultures, considering that Webster is so internationally diverse. I really do look forward to trying new things at Webster and learning from my failures. I feel like Webster University will give me the opportunity to learn from different experiences in life that I can’t get in America.
