Call Me Maria Essay (Whoopee) Who is Whoopee? Whoopee is a friend that Maria met and likes her a lot. She is almost always positive and happy, and wants others to be just like her. She adds a lot of joy to Maria’s life as well. Whoopee is very kind and caring, and she is always looking out for others like Maria. First of all, Whoopee is always looking out for Maria and wants her to stay happy. An example of Whoopee looking out for Maria is when Maria says “Whoopee talks me out of my black moods and my dark days” (page 38). This shows that Whoopee wants Maria to be happy by helping her as much as she can. She “clears her bad moods” and “helps her bad days”. Since Whoopee is always happy, she knows how to get people to feel the same way.

example of Whoopee looking out for Maria is when Maria says “I have seen her stop bullets from a driveby shooting with her bare hands” (page 39).
This shows how Whoopee will do whatever she can to keep others safe and happy. It doesn’t matter what it is, just anything that will help others.
Secondly, Whoopee can transform Maria mood from Maria triste to Maria alegre. One example of her doing this is when Maria says “she transforms me from Maria Triste to Maria
Alegre. Whoopee is magical” (page 82). This shows that she does anything to make others happy because Maria even says that she changes her mood from sad to happy. She is making people think that she is magical by changing their moods. Another example of this happening is when she says “she will make us laugh” (page 40). This shows how she will
always make people laugh and make the happy. She will change their mood and make it
a
“bright day”.
Finally, Whoopee has no fears except herself. We know this because Maria tells us that “Whoopee has no fears except the mirrors in her path… Whoopee is scared of herself”
(page 40). She thinks that if she does not make Maria laugh, Maria will laugh at her. She does not see her own beauty, she doesn’t think she is good enough. This is her secret sadness.
Another example of Whoopee fearing herself is when Maria says “she thinks we will not love her unless she is louder, faster, and stronger than anyone else” (page 40). This shows that she is scared to mess up and thinks she has to be perfect. Which puts a lot of pressure on her because she feels like if she does something wrong or not as good as someone else, Maria will not like her anymore. These are the only times when Maria is sad.
In conclusion, Whoopee is almost always happy and joyful and wants others to be also. She tries her hardest to make Maria laugh and like her a lot. But she fears that if Maria doesn’t laugh, Maria won’t like her anymore. That is Whoopee’s only fear, that people won’t like her if shes not perfect. But otherwise, she is always very happy and excited. She always wants Maria to be happy, and if shes not, she will make her happy. She always changes her mood from sad to happy. She is very tough and caring, she wants everyone to be happy like her. Whoever she meets, she will add joy to their life and make them happy. Without
Whoopee, Maria would not always be “alegre”, she would most likely be “triste” most of the
time.
